That would be BruceE - or does it not count, seeing as he's American?
@tracieknits and@bruceE sorry i didnt realise tomorrow IS Guy Fawkes!
November days are flying by already! Yes of course Bruce counts !
Do you have Bonfire Night in America? I' m not keen on it,mainly coz fireworks are sold weeks before the big night and animals get so distressed by all the bangs going off every night.
Its nice on the Night tho to go to watch an organised display, all wrapped up warm, and watch the lovely exploding colours while drinking hot chocolate! X

We don't, CandiceMarie. And in fact though I've learned about Guy Fawkes before (at least in school I think), I always forget what he was all about....
edit... this is my 800th post. Maybe it's time I moved in, and we stopped having this long distance relationship, peeps
Hi @wendyjane!
Guy Fawkes was the creator of the Gunpowder Plot, a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament..the failure of which has been commemorated in Britain since 5 November 1605. His effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, accompanied by a firework display.
We used to say this rhyme when we were kids..
"Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder,treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot!" xx

Well Guy Fawkes is remembered for this reason but in a POSITIVE light by protesters around the world, including the Anonymous collective. I've been to more than a few protests where people were wearing Guy Fawkes masks.
But no, we don't have bonfires, and our congress is so incredibly unpopular with EVERYONE in this country, that I highly doubt anyone in the US would celebrate Guy Fawkes the way it's supposed to be celebrated in the UK.
And mine is Friday....WooHoo. Turning 56, edging closer to retirement.
Oh same as my DD @GoLinda! X only two more sleeps
@tracieknits i was thinking same thing when i was typing out that poem..
We didnt really think about the words as kids, and i doubt many people then or today really give a thought to GF when they're round the bonfire.
a great many peep in uk have very cynical feelings towards government these days..all govts are corrupt IMHO ( sorry to bring politics onto the forum!) x

Aww, too bad you didn't post this sooner otherwise we could've recommended that they have their grandkids first!
Dad always said: " Kids! Don't have any!". But we did anyway - probably just to spite him - not realizing that it was actually a very clever curse.
@CandiceMarie, here's my take on corrupt government:
All human beings are imperfect; therefore, all human institutions (both public sector and private sector) are likewise imperfect.
Therefore, the price of liberty, good government, honest private enterprise, etc. is (no matter how much of a cliche) eternal vigilance. That's why I have to keep struggling, no matter how bummed I am about yesterday's election results here in the US.
But I digress from the topic of birthdays--hope all you November BD people have a very enjoyable celebration

@Tracieknits is right. I think millions of people in this country would happily burn effigies of their congress members - of both parties.
But enough of that. HAPPY BIRTHDAY everyone!!!
