I'm giving up sugar for a month
23 Feb 2014, 22:36
Just to prove to myself I can do it.

I don't generally cut out big groups of food entirely - I have more of a "balanced diet" approach, but sugar doesn't add ANYTHING nutritionally. I'm not going to cut out fruit, but won't eat dried fruit which is much more concentrated sugar. And no honey, syrups or alcohol.

I have - and always have had - a very sweet tooth, so part of doing this is to see if it changes my perception of "sweet".
Good luck, looking forward to seeing how you get on

Good luck with your noble endeavour. Please keep us informed as to how you get on.
That's a really good thing to do. I don't eat the higher GI fruits either - stick to Apple's and berries - and all sorts of things now taste very sweet - cauliflower, cinnamon tea, pistachios, mascarpone, walnuts ...

You'll be amazed! Good luck :clover:
Good luck. I did it for a whole six months until I moved out to here and I got knocked out of my routine. You will love it. It kills hunger pangs stone dead and if you do eat anything with sugar in it - it will taste vile.....

I need to get back onto it pronto.
Thanks for the encouragement Everyone. Chichi13, I'm hoping I will be amazed, can't imagine not craving sweet things, but hope that it happens.
Good luck, I too look forward to hearing how you go. I wish I had your resolve :)
I hope it goes well for you, let us know how you get on. I have tried to give up sugar so often I have lost count. I manage a couple of days and am then presented with a cake or fruit scone and my resolve goes out the window. I did manage yesterday by convincing my husband to have a donut with his cuppa as I can resist donuts then when he was choosing sweets to nibble in the car I guided him towards sweets I don't like (not easy as there are not many sweets I don't like) I felt very righteous. Today is a fast day and I always have a salad of some sort for dinner so no sugar again today. I will try for day 3 tomorrow if I succeed I think that will be a record. :like:
Hello!

After reading about the horrors of what my favourite sweetner (Splenda), 2 mos ago, I switched to 'stevia' which is suppose to be the all natural sweetner. It is very sweet (1/8 tsp sweetens my large tea). I now only use it if I really want a cup of sweet tea. So, I think, after 2 mos of no sweeteners, my tastes have changed a lot and (real sugar) sweet things are mega sweet to me now, which is not nice.

Good luck with your efforts.
Good luck @KataMac
Good luck, and please keep us posted.

My experiences with giving up things:

1. Sugar in tea - gave up 2 spoonsful per cup for Lent, the tea tasted horribly bitter for most of Lent but when Easter came I hated tthe tea with sugar, have not had sugar in tea since.

2. Milk in tea or coffee - gave up when living in college without access to fresh milk, missed it for ages but ended up used to it without, hated the taste of it with milk when I returned to life with a fridge and ever since only drink black tea and coffee

3. Alcohol - gave up for 3 months just to check I could, missed it throughout and happily resumed moderate drinking

4. Caffeine - gave up tea, coffee, chocolate, etc for 3 months to see if the scare stories about caffeine were true, found absolutely no effect, drank herbal tea throughout but came to like it less and less, returned to all of tea, coffee, chocolate very happily.

5. Vegetarian for about 20 years for ethical reasons, married a carnivore and caved in at the smell of steak, now eat all meats.

So for me it seems that I can to a limited extent train myself to like a different version, but not to stop wanting something altogether.

But other vegetarians I know would be absolutely revolted by eating meat, so people vary.
Good luck, hope to try the same myself some day soon xox little by little we get there! Keep us posted! X my taste is changing.. I always drink strong tea with a splash of milk,no sugar..
Since IF ing,ive noticed that my tea tastes sweet...i had no idea til now that lactose in milk is sweet...so think i am getting more sensitive taste buds!
I think the only way I can do it, is know it's for a limited time (and a month is pretty short really). The thought of giving up sugar for good is terrifying :D.

Funny thing sugar and milk in tea - when I first drank tea as a child/teen I always had 2 sugars, but stopped when about 17 (camping trip!) and now can't drink tea with sugar. Milk though, I have tried often to have it without, or at least less, but I just like strong, milky tea (full cream milk too).

@kentishlass, thanks for sharing your experiences
A week of no sugar and I am really missing it. Haven't had any physical signs of no sugar in my diet - no change to energy levels, activity levels, sleep etc. So there doesn't seem to be a physical dependance but I just miss things like jam on my egg toast, rusks dunked in tea, chocolate because feeling "first day of period sooky crampy". Good to know I can do without it, but so far I'm thinking that roll on 3 weeks time when I can tuck into a sweet treat again!
I'm missing the alcohol less (which surprises me). Would have loved a cold beer yesterday arvo in the sun, but the "want" went away pretty much as soon as I'd finished thinking it.
