In the wagon?
05 Jan 2014, 14:16
I have no clue what the opposite expression to "fall of the wagon" is, but as from today I am in/on it. The entire fall has kind of escalated into Christmas wine wise and after last nights dinner with friends I have come to the conclusion that enough is enough. So as for today I will not consummate one single drop of any alcoholic beverage for the rest of January. Not only will I feel better, it might do something to the scales as well?

Feel so much better now when it's written down - in public

I would say that you'll be keeping to the straight and narrow perhaps?

In any case good decision, I'll be joining you but cutting out cakes etc as I don't really drink!

Being "on the wagon" originally (I think) was used to mean not drinking alcohol, so "falling off the wagon" meant failing to avoid alcohol, but now it seems to be used to mean failing to keep to any health program.

Not sure why not drinking was being on the wagon though...anyone know?

I read the same thing. This part sort of sums it up. "Water wagons were a commonplace sight in US cities at the time. They didn't carry drinking water but were used to damp down dusty streets during dry weather. Those who had vowed to give up drink and were tempted to lapse said that they would drink from the water-cart rather than take strong drink."

Kind of amazing that the expression has lasted so long and been applied to other things!

I would say 'take the pledge'...
but that makes me think of furniture polish now
and as I'm such a lightweight and don't own furniture polish neither really applies to me
Good choice though for a dry January.

I find that drinking often leads to eating things I wouldn't have otherwise so the benefits are two-fold!

Well done - go for it!

I think I might go 'on the wagon' as regards going lower carbs from now on, taking into consideration @carorees and @Fatdog 's comments re low carb and waist reduction on another thread just now

That means the piece of Zen Baker ginger parkin I took out of the freezer just now, gently defrosting on the worktop, may be my last for some time

Me and youngest son (soon to be 15) made a deal - he voluntarily goes to a weekend course in studying technique and don't drink one drop of alcohol until that class in early February. Then we'll se
