Here is a little quote from Self Magazine - it works for me anyway !!!!!!! Yay to inhibiting the development of fat cells !!!!!!!!!!!

"There's more to a glass of vino than looking cool a la Olivia Pope or getting a little buzz. There's actually a wealth of benefits in that red.

A compound called piceatannol, found in red wine, may inhibit the development of fat cells.
Enjoying a small daily glass of wine (up to 5 ounces) is correlated with lower levels of depression.
Moderate wine consumption may lower your risk of developing chronic kidney disease.
A diet high in resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, can lead to improved cardiovascular function.
Moderate alcohol drinkers, including wine drinkers, performed better on cognitive tests than nondrinkers."
Sounds good to me! X
Bogus claims, alas.

Resveratrol isn't living up to the hype and there is such a tiny amount in wine, it wouldn't matter. Drinking had negative impacts on women's health at relatively low intake levels. Very tough on the liver. I wouldn't drink it to help the kidney.
Alas and sadly I have found that if I have a glass of wine on my feed day I put on weight ! More so than I would have otherwise.
I lost 5lb during my sober for October challenge. FACT.
Sorry.
Thanks for posting this. Guaranteed to get us going! I have dieted both with and without wine and it did not make a jot of difference to me. However I did find this interesting for those people who do like to have a glass of wine and want to be sure they can still lose. http://www.leangains.com/2010/07/truth- ... uscle.html
I'm not sure about the red wine but hubby is an alcoholic and is skinny, mainly because when he drinks which is most of the time he doesn't eat anything. So alcohol, especially vodka can make you lose weight, I wouldn't recommend it though or you too will end up permanently bad tempered and brain dead.
(This is tongue in cheek)
Thanks @RawKaren for the leangains article. I especially loved this quote: "No big surprise when we're dealing with the alarmist fitness mainstream that can't seem to put things in the right perspective if their life depended on it."
Life is to be lived and enjoyed, we put far too much stress on ourselves when we live by so many rules and restrictions. Ancient peoples knew and understood that life is short and a sabre-tooth tiger can sneak up and eat you at any moment. Our sabre-tooth tiger is the misinformation, rules and societal bs that prevent us from enjoying the occasional glass of wine, dessert and pasta. The Grandmothers were right - have a little bit every once in a while, focus on helping others and BREATHE!!! Nothing is worse than dying from lung cancer or brain cancer after living a rigidly imposed life of diet and exercise and never enjoying anything in the quest for immortality. Then you die at 63 anyway - yes, I was at a living wake yesterday and the one thing my friend said to us is to relax and enjoy life more. She wished she had and now she can't. Sorry to get morose, but I had a lot to think about during the event.
(A living wake is when the person has not passed yet and they invite all their friends, family and relatives to come and celebrate with them before they go. It was beautiful, brave and strangely joyful as she invited musicians, poets and friends/family to bless her one last time.)
P.S. Stop waiting to be thin to live your life. I have been fat/obese my whole life and enjoyed exercise, family, friends, have a great career and amazingly fun vacations and hobbies. You can live life as a fat person, you can be smart as a fat person. You can even be healthy as a fat person (HAES.org) but don't lose so much time waiting to be thin that life passes you by. When I started enjoying myself and took the emphasis off dieting, I lost weight and enjoyed life so much more. Try it. End of homily (written with love) for today... ;)
Amen to that, @MLCDz - I know exactly what you mean as I have spent a great deal of my life "waiting" to be at the perfect weight and size before I could do something (put on a swimsuit and sit by the pool for instance) - its a total waste and we must enjoy the lives we have at the size we ARE, before it is too late. Thank you again for the post.
Funny you should mention this. I spotted an article in Scientific American about the genes that control cholesterol transport in the liver and how a small percentage of people have a variant that interacts with alcohol to bring big benefits for heart health, but most don't and it could be those few people who created the statistical benefit of moderate alcohol consumption seen in the studies. Most of us are probably not benefiting from alcohol. :-(
Amen @MLCDz. My friends son commited suicide last week. She's had to bring him back home from US to lay him to rest in his home country. A living wake how wonderful.

Anyhow. Enjoy life, you've only got one chance.

Iike i said I lost more weight without alcohol in my life, but I did it to challenge myself. IF has proved that you can enjoy your food, your treats and life and still lose weight. Just be happy.
I think the worst think about drinking, for me, is that i lose all inhibitions and eat whatever isn't nailed down - especially sugar and carbs.
After much thinking (ouch) I have come to the conclusion that I have no inclination whatsoever to give up my wine. I hardly drink hard liquor and even more seldom beer, but I do want my glass of wine (or two) most of the days.
