Sorry to let off steam (literally!) but in the absence of moaning at my better half (away at work - although I've already grouched to him on the phone tonight) I want to come on and grumble about being too ***ing hot. I know all you folks in the US of A and Down Under are laughing at us with our paltry 30C/85F degree heat as you stand on parched cracked land in 50C heat (well, Australia and New Zealand will be standing on parched, cracked 50C land in 6 months time), but this is BRITAIN for goodness sake and this is not what we're used to!

Things I dislike about this current heatwave:

- not having aircon, either in the house or in my car
- not being able to get into said car after 11am for fear of melting/suffocating/hands welding to steering wheel
- not being able to move at more than dawdling pace due to again melting. Cycling downhill with elbows out to air armpits is current favoured mode of transport but I live at the top of a hill (in York, 'hills' are all relative, it's a slight bump)
- a morning run? no chance! Weekend hike in the hills? Think again!
- getting fed up with going to the loo all the time due to consuming gallons of iced water. Bored of drinking water.
- would rather like a hot drink once in a while but guess what - it's too **** hot!
- Cuddling OH makes me too **** hot (for wrong reasons!)
- not sleeping properly, cause it's too **** hot...

Things I like about heatwave
- have not worn socks in about 3 weeks - less washing (although ironically great drying weather)
- ice cream (not on fast days!)
- cooking less - salad and a slice of cheese is now a meal
- er... struggling now.
I don't like to appear like a typical british moaner (and we do like a moan, don't we) but I feel like I'm the only person in the country who isn't enjoying this weather. Don't get me wrong, a bit of sunshine is all well and good (up until about 23C) but this is going a bit far. I know that this time last year it wouldn't stop raining and then we had the coldest march on record etc etc and all the weather folks stand there each day trying to make the forecast interesting (when all they really need to say is 'it's going to be ****ing hot again, people') but, in British forecast convention, sunny weather is always A Good Thing and rain is Bad (no matter how much we'd all benefit from some at the moment) - notice they always say 'risk of showers' and 'promise of sunshine'. Bring on Autumn, when I can actually get on and DO things in reasonable, BRITISH weather, that's all I can say. You foreign folks may mock us but I like my 4-seasons-in-one-day, sleet-battered, fish-and-chips-in-the-rain weather, different every day. You know where you are. Sort of. When it's hot every day we don't know what to do with ourselves, what to talk about. It gets a bit tedious saying 'hot again, isn't it?' to the neighbours...

Anyway I've had my say and I shall leave now, to attempt to sleep again in an airless room and plan my move to the Outer Hebrides...

oh, and I fully realise that, whilst we get mocked for grumbling that it's too hot, there are other nations waiting in the wings to mock us for grumbling when we have a bit of snow, too. Canada, I'm looking at you...

OK and breathe, Rant over...
Right now I am most definitely a Brit who is not enjoying this weather :( in fact I've been praying for rain! I'm in the middle of exams so stuck in my room with my head in books cramming as much information in as possible. I can't even work outside as I live in a concrete jungle with no outdoor space!
I would put money on my prayers being answered and it raining next Thurs when I finish exams and will finally be able to enjoy the nice weather
Bah humbug greenmonster, it's ....ing lovely and long may it continue. ;)
I'm loving it I'm afraid. But then again I spent my formative years in Australia. Though I am sat in front of a fan even at this time of the nice because my pain levels are messing about with my temperature control, or my hormones or the painkillers are.
The only downside is the water retention issue, its been horrendous.

I would like it to rain as I've run out of water in my rain barrel for the garden and I am getting fed up of carrying a watering can around for numerous trips twice a day.
I say moan if you wanna, greenmonster. It is 93 here according to my tablet and I've just cranked up the AC so I could have spicy taco soup on my fast day. It may be hotter over here in the US; but were spoiled brats with our AC in cars, homes, jobs and shopping centers. Never underestimate the power of a cool shower on a hot day, though. I promise you will feel better.
The first time I heard a Brit call 80F weather sweltering, I couldn't stop giggling. Almost 20 years later, I still laugh at the thought. I love hot weather, though its not great for running. I don't actually use A/C much in Okinawa: I run the dehumidifier instead. I survived 6 summers in NYC without A/C, including a few blackout years (I could escape to an air conditioned lab, TBF). I guess I'm a weirdo.
How funny...great laugh reading your posts.

30 degrees and I'm just starting to feel comfortable, I have the oil heater on atm cause its 19 degrees.

Spent last Christmas/New Year in Perth and I must admit 40 degrees at 6pm wasnt funny, and I must admit to handle heat you need either air-con or a pool.

Best of luck with the heatwave :clover:
A/C, pool, or ocean!
I love 30 degrees. It's winter here in Oz and 26! Can you buy portable aircons over there. You can here. They are small enough to store. We also get reverse cycle airconditioners that heat as well as cool. Might be an option too.
30 degrees how pleasant. Supposed to get to 22 here today but the weekend is heading down. Hate being cold.
"I know that this time last year it wouldn't stop raining and then we had the coldest march .."

One of the reasons why packed in gardening.

I have memories of trying to trim a 10 foot hedge in these condtions. I couldn't see what I was doing for sweat running down my face and my shirt by the end was quite revolting.... you could have wrung it out.

I've had stuff to do this break and it hasn't got done.

(its grown my marigolds tho' )
I agree you need either the AC, pool or ocean to make the heat bearable. 80-85 is about perfect for me. But, once it climbs above 88ish I start feeling like I might melt. I won't even walk outside until after 9pm right now. It is light and quite warm at that hour because of daylight savings time here.
as a POM, your post made me giggle (and thats not easy on a fast day!), but at least down under to tell you the truth we're more geared up for it, ie car parks are under cover, all cars / buildings have air con / we're used to drinking water, everyone walks around swigging from a bottle constantly!
Right as an Aussie I will start the ball rolling for some tips:

Don't cook just enjoy those salads
Wear natural fabrics like cotton linen
Exercise early
Spritzers good happy hour drink cool long, refreshing and quenching
And sorry no air con but fans good
Make up bed with natural linens cottons too maybe move OH to spare room

I did love your post and if any consultation it is cold here and I have the added cold of fasting just put on 3 layers of wool before I felt warm then I remembered it is the cold of fasting that I am experiencing

Another tip ...throw in an extra fast sure to cool you down a bit
