A bit late to this one, but having hip length highlighted hair that was naturally mousy blonde/ light brown that was going grey at the roots made me realize that I wouldn't be able to afford the treatments it would need to stay blonde. So I had a full head of foils put in with just bleach to soften the graduation between very blonde tips and darker but greying top. I now have hair that is graduated from very light to darker all the way up. I will stay natural (apart from semi permanents) now and cut the too bright, too yellow hair off at the ends.
If you want to stay on top of your colour but can't afford a salon style, ask at your local collage that does hairdressing as a course. The students always need real people to practice on and they are fully 'controlled' by the lecturer. I have generally only paid for the colour used at cost price, not for the hours put in. The last foils had me surrounded by 5 students as my hair was so long that 2 girls were putting the bleach on at one part of my head whilst 2 were neutralising it at another part of my head and a 5th girl was just handing out foil sheets and running around being the gofer. There is no way that I could have afforded that kind of service at a normal salon. It cost me 2 bottles of bleach/colour which came to £15. I have had some fantastic colouring fun with the college girls, they love the challenge. In fact, I think a semi-permanant dip dye or something else just as outrageous should be on the cards soon. I fancy having the under layers doing in brights, so that the when I plait my hair or put it up there are flashes of really bright colours running in threads through it.
