Do we scurry off to the salon or whatever means of eradicating this new color I am seeing all over my head. It's happening at a frightening speed. I am only 49

I have mousey thin hair and me trying only to color grey sections will have me chucking a hormonal fit. So if I covered the lot.
I would surely speed up the process of having any hair left.

I cannot afford the $85 to cover regrowth.

If I accepted the grey can it be enhanced with a rinse I do myself?

I do not like how people see grey as aging. Even though true.
I think it can look great on some.

I don't know what I want to do.
Blame your parents Zamale, or at least your genes! I am the same age and don't have any, but at least you aren't going bald instead!
A rinse that washes out in a week and can be redone at home would be your answer. It would cover the bit of grey you have at the moment and not be too expensive. Ask the lady at the pharmacy counter.
Oh I've had your problem for years! I'm only 45 but actually started going grey in my early 20s. I have naturally dark brown hair, and dyed it that way for years. I finally got fed up with how quickly the white roots appeared. This year, I took the plunge and bleached my hair. I never thought I'd suit blonde, but I LOVE IT. Perhaps you could try it

Bean
It looks good bean, and the roots don't show as much do they?
I always said that I would grow old gracefully.........cough.........splutter
Then I decided that I'd rather grow old disgracefully and have happily being doing my own 'colour' ever since. It's a faff but it's better than being grey, in my opinion, as I don't suit grey hair. I never get it done at a salon, too expensive, and Clairol do a fantastic range so, get yourself of to Boots and get on with it, good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Ballerina x
Now I have dark roots...much better, feel young again!

No, .I don't think a salon can dye your hair any better than you can yourself...and it's SO much cheaper! Go for it

I'm naturally dark haired too but have been dyeing my hair at home since my early 30s when I first noticed a white 'Mallen Streak' developing in my fringe. Over the years I've gradually gone lighter as my complexion has gone paler and dark hair no longer seemed to suit me. I'm now happily blonde like Nursebean! Don't know what my 'natural' colour would be any more but expect I'd have a full head of grey/white!
@nursebean

They do say as we get older blonde does flatter and soften lines on the face. It looks pretty on you. Not that I am saying you have lines.

In saying that your white line on the other picture is like platinum grey not steely which is nice when the time is right for you.
I did try growing it out naturally but it just looks weird having black hair with white roots. Not a good look AT ALL!

@Callyanna I just assumed you were naturally that colour! I can't imagine you with dark hair. I guess its what you're used to now isn't it.

Bean :dazed:
I naturally had dark brown hair. I started colouring it in my 40s when some grey started to appear. I used semipermanent home colours boosted by colour enhancing shampoos which covered the grey quite successfully. As I got older the dark brown looked inappropiate ( my husband called it the Ann Widdecombe look) so I started using a lighter brown/dark blonde and finally went reddish. A couple of years ago while on holiday the sun and salt water bleached the coloured sections of hair ( semipermanent colours do contain hydrogen peroxide so do have some permanent effect) My hair was quite short at that point so I decided to grow out the colour just to see what was there because like Callyanna I had no idea what my natural colour was at that point. I am now greyish but the non grey hairs are still very dark and overall the colour suits my skin tone much better and I get a lot of compliments about my hair. So it might be worth giving tour natural colour a go. Not so easy if you have long hair but so much easier and cheaper in the long run if you find it suits you.
What does your hair look like now Beany ? @nursebean

I actually 'feel' blonde now Beanie! My 5 year old grandson who has almost white blonde hair tells me we both have 'yellow' hair!

I beg to differ my dear Beanie - salons, the good ones, does it so much better. I found that after a life of DIMS, when I become a woman of a certain age, the home products lend colors to my hair that wasn't what they where expected to be. So I started to do it at the salon/s and here I must say, you pay for what you get. The local one have always done my hair in red-toned brown with highlights and the roots showed quite much after a month or two. The hight end very expensive salon I treated myself to as a being good gift, took 2 hrs to do the coloring and the result was simply the greatest. It looked so natural and is in a more blondish kind of hue and after 2 months or so, the roots aren't that obvious.

I am aware that not all can afford such luxurious indulgence, but as I said to the DH - if I go downtown and have the hair done every 3-4 months or the local one every 8 weeks, it kind of even out in the long run. At least I hope so. And the compliments I have got for me do, is simply worth it all
Er, ahem, yes, er...at the moment it has slightly mauve tinges from the toner where I keep trying to whiten the blonde. My hairdresser was impressed with my bleaching but as she tried to cut it realised how badly damaged it is. She said if I hadn't had such thick hair, I probably would have lost some of it...doh! So now I have to give it some intense conditioning! Then I think I will try that lovely shade of pink! Oh why not...you only live once after all

Yes, I guess you're right @Wolfie but it does depend on the current build-up on your hair and how good you are at colouring. I couldn't get mine bleached because it would have taken them a few hours and I can't sit for that long. I think my mum did a pretty good job. We went through several stages: colour stripping, bleaching x3 or 4 and now toning with shampoos. Need to be kind to it now, though...lots of conditioning!
