What bedding do you have?
18 May 2014, 08:08
I never thought to ask here before but I can never get this right......... When I stay in hotels I sink into the bed, I am covered by a cloud like duvet and my head is cradled in a soft marshmallow that puffs up either side. I try so hard to recreate this at home but never get it right. I sleep with an arched back and I waste so much money on bedding. Down or synthetic? That is the question. Which brand and tog is best for clouds and marshmallows?
Thanks all x

The lightest duvet you can get is duck down and incredibly light and warm. Similarly a good feather pillow is the way to go for me.
My hubby's mum gave us a puffin duvet which is spectacularly light and warm, it folds into a small backpack, but I can't have it on me now as being a lsdy of a certain age, I overheat!!!
We have separate ones now!

Good morning WD, I have always avoided synthetic duvets and a few years ago decided that I would invest in an Hungarian 100% goose down duvet. I got fed up with feathers breaking down and although it was ruinously expensive it was worth every penny. I love the feeling of being enveloped in this lovely soft lightweight cloud of comfort. I also bought the matching pillows but soon reverted to normal feather/down as they are more supportive. The only 100% down ones I can find are in John Lewis. Mine was form M&S but they only do mixtures now. I am seriously considering changing my extra large king sized one for two singles. Hope all this helps

I really do love the idea of soft pillow top mattress, but with menopausal night sweats that would be a disaster. I am still paying off my bed and each stack of coils is individually wrapped so they dont all move when the other coils move, so if someone next to you moves, you won't be that disturbed. It is heavenly and feels like somewhat like a pillow top, its not.
Do buy a polar fleece blanket, you will be wrapped in loveliness and yumminess. Mine was $100 but I waited for it to be on special at $60. Don't buy a cheap, won't be as heavy and marshmallowy (is that a word?) I even bought polar fleece sleep pants, but I am cooking (menopause) and unseasonal warm May weather, winter is 2 weeks away and it feels like late spring. I also have a down dooner, but I love my dense polar blanket the most

when I was a child my mother would kill and pluck chooks in the kitchen, feathers everywhere, but I had the best doona on the block. On occasion in bed, a feather would make an appearance out of the seam on the corners.
Its a european thing to do so I am told.

We have a latex mattress with a latex pillow top. It's extremely comfy but can be a bit hot in summer. We have a cotton quilt/doona/duvet or whatever it's called and add a blanket in winter. I also have a latex pillow that I love but my husbands pillow is as flat as a pancake which he loves.

Latex top mattress on top of a continental bed. I use Tempur (memory foam) and ever since I started with that, I never more gnash my teeth. As a pillow under my are (to keep the shoulder and neck aligned I use a down pillow and to cover myself a down duvet. Both downy things from IKEA, good stuff to affordable prices ;)
And of course - only cotton bedsheets.

We have a mattress that was sold as being medium firmness but we still found it too hard, so bought the memory foam mattress topper from IKEA like Wolfie says. On that I have 600 thread count cotton sheets (so silky and cool) and a silk-filled duvet, on top of which in the winter we have a down duvet as well. The silk-filled duvet is really light and cloud-like and is supposedly less allergenic than down or feather because the dust mites that live on skin flakes don't like silk so they say. I have two down pillows as well.

I still don't sleep brilliantly but I do sleep better at home than most places away because I think my bed is more comfortable than most!

They often have good quality duvets in HomeSense at good prices.

Spent a fortune on our bed a few years ago! It has a warm squidgy side and a cool firmer side. I tend to keep it on squidgy as I love the feel and our old farmhouse never gets hot! My duvet is duck feather, it has two pieces that popper together in winter. One half is a bit heavier and is for Spring and Autumn, the other is lightweight for summer. Always cotton sheets and duvet sets and feather pillows. When I have been away I love coming home to my bed.

And there is now an Achica bedding ad at the bottom of the screen

I changed my bed about 4 years ago, now a Relyon with memory foam temperature adjusting topper, which has been fabulous. Before I got it I had painful heels (fascitis?) and also stiffness and pain on getting up. Since - nada :victory: :victory: :victory:

For bedding, high cotton thread from dunhelm mill, which I bought after staying in a self catering cottage which had the same. Made in Pakistan, and very smooth and cool in summer, warm in winter. I have always had cotton pillowcases since suffering skin problems, as it helps to keep skin comfortable. As for pillows, I've had a range over the years. I think the key is to replace them frequently, maybe every year or so. But know just what you mean about marshmallow softness @Wendy Darling when you are staying in a hotel or good quality b and b!

I was going to say Marigolds and petunias....

We have an ultra firm Hypnos mattress and we each have separate tops. I have a 10 tog synthetic jobbie, summer and winter and hub has a sheet and a blanket. Even on the caravan, we have the same.
It works, we're happy.

I don't really know, other than to say .... It's the thick winter one and I really should change to summer but I can't be bothered hunting for it in the garage!

We have a tempur mattress and pillows which took a bit of getting used to but was worth it for the health of my back and down duvets - light for summer and heavy for winter. We got a wool duvet for the spare bed as it's supposed to adapt for all weathers - a bit different as it doesn't wrap around you like down does but also good.

This is just the sheets, but we invested in some high thread count (800 I think) sheets from John Lewis and they make a huge difference!

We've started referring to the bed as 'the cloud' now.
