Great topic! :like:

Some of my favourite words are äiti ('mother' in my native language Finnish), schemozzle (favourite Aussie word for something that's a real mess), Kreislaufverstörung (I lived in Germany for a year a long time ago and would always wonder what was wrong with my German workmates when that was the reason why they didn't show up for work), and pretty much any Italian word!

Kreislaufverstörung? I give up. Do tell. Google translate won't do it. I tried saying it slow and fast, and it didn't sound like much. So now I'm waiting with bated breath. Bated. There's an interesting word.

I'm also very fond of avuncular maybe because it only has one meaning (I think) "like an uncle"

Wendyjane, my father's parents were German immigrants (both died before I was born), but I only ever heard my father use 2 phrases: Spreichen sie Deutsch? and danke schoen (I have no idea about the spelling) He was 10 or so when WWI happened so maybe he avoided speaking German for fear of public disapproval.

I may be lowering the tone here, but apart from serendipity and pastel, mine are good old English words: trollop, bollocks (sorry!!), wench,

I am always reminded of Blackadder and his pronunciation of certain words, Baldrick for instance - luscious!!

If you do you'll have to clean up the mess.

The one word at the top of my list comes from the Hawaiian name for the Trigger fish. Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

Other than that, "Dinner's ready" is my all time favourite.

I love when words I use as a scientist get used in normal speech, like vestigial (Thanks, Pete), ubiquitous, and ectopic.

Otherwise, vespertine and languorous.

My husband uses one technical word a lot in everyday speech - orthogonal. A line is orthogonal if it's at 90 degrees to another. An issue is orthogonal if it's unrelated to another.

Literally it translates to 'circulation disturbance'. I could never work out whether it's a fair dinkum (=real, genuine) medical thing or just a convenient excuse for taking a day off...
