Mortified - "are you pregnant?"
06 Feb 2014, 15:37
Hey all,

I am reaaaaaalllly upset! I'm a bit bloated today and my body fat has gone up after not eating great on my feed days (still under TDEE mind).

I'm a teacher and a year 10 pupil just went (in front of whole class) "Miss are you pregnant?" I stood dumbstruck for a minute and she said "you've got a bump!" And I went bright red and she realised her mistake! I didn't know what to say but I nearly started crying. I know she wasn't doing it to be rude but they just don't think!

I'm pretty resilient and used to being called anything under the sun (challenging secondary school in inner city newcastle) but that really got under my skin!

I'm almost half a stone lighter than I was two weeks ago but it's clearly not making any difference and my horrible fat belly makes me look pregnant! Really upset!
Oh Danielle! I feel for you, I don't know what to say but heres some *hugs*.
During the phase in my life when we truly tried hard to get pregnant, I did get bloated due to all sorts of fertility treatments. A comment like that (and they wasn't few) had me in tears.
So I feel for you, and send you big Swedish hugs
Thanks you two, I'm just really embarrassed! I'm trying to remember they're kids so don't think but it's still hard!

@Wolfie - first time I've said this outside a doctors room but I can't have children, I'm not ready to at the moment but it's still upsetting knowing I'll have to try fertility treatment so I know exactly how you felt!

Danielle21711 - fert. treatments are no fun if you ask me and we found out that The DH and me could never conceive. I creed buckets but luckily I am today an intensely proud mama of two gorgeous, fantastic sons (aged 15 and 18 this year) born in Asia. Needless to say, I love them on the border of crazy    LOL.

I wish you all the luck the day when you are ready :like:
Bless you, I've had the same also said at work in good faith and felt instantly angry and mortified. We never spoke again ...
You'll feel better about it in a day or two and all shall be well {{{+}}}
Take a deep breath Hun, you know she didn't mean to hurt you, or is she one of the horrid ones.
Don'tcha just love yr10's.
Obviously your frame is slender as your tum is showing up due to bloating.
 OH @Danielle21711 I really feel for you on both
your problems
Yes children do jump in without thinking
"out of the mouths of babes" Whatever that actually means I think its innocence and yes they are innocent at that age so no harm meant but hurtful to you nonetheless shed the tears if you need to, but try and forgive she will forget this incident quicker than you. Take care.

I agree with@carieoates good point Carie! And so true..i have the big butt, big thighs,arms,everything..so no one would ever think i was preg - even if i wasnt post menopausal! - coz i just fat all over!
Thanks everyone! Yeah I know she didn't mean it, I imagine she was probably embarrassed too.

I wish it was a case of being slender-most of my weight sits on my tummy but I usually wear scarves and stuff to distract-running late this morning I didn't grab a scarf and so it was in full view!
One time BruceE's cousin's daughter, about age 6, asked him if he was pregnant. Does that make you feel any better? >.<
So sorry you are hurting, Danielle.

Just wanted to send you some hugs & hope that you can file the experience away somewhere & not stay too upset.

Here come the hugs......:beauty: :beauty: :beauty: :beauty: :beauty:

Chin up, sweetie xx

@danielle21711

I know how you feel. I have developed some sort of IBS in the last few years and luckily, am rarely in close proximity to children and adults 'tend' (some exceptions!) to be more diplomatic.

However. I used to be a very slim, sporty young girl, but I have always had a tiny tum. Since I hit puberty I have yearned for a flat tummy. When I was about 20 I had an epiphany! I think flat tummies (obviously there are exceptions) are quite boyish, and pre-pubescant girl-ish. I actually think a little bump is natural, cute, womanly and nothing to be ashamed of.

Having said all that, having IBS gives me an almost constant bloat so I do know how you feel, I promise! I find tops and dresses that hug my boobs and flow out below them work the best for me. And as you said, scarves are wonderful!

And to make you feel better, when I was at Uni I used to childmind in Uni holidays (I was a 18-21 yr old very fit female at the time). I got the following 'compliments' from the children I looked after:

'Are you going bald? You've got a receding hairline'
'Your boobies are so dangly'
'Your arms are hairy like a boys'

Kids. Dontcha just love 'em.
And another one for you, my cousin's little boy asked his dad last week if he could listen to the baby in his tummy!! Us cruel adults did all laugh at him as he does have a rather large stomach which he really shouldn't have at his age!
Hahahaha, oh your stories made me smile! Thank you all! I feel much better today as I'm so close to my valentines target and I know I'm going to make it! Yay! Also my bloating has gone down (I'm an IBS sufferer too!) so hopefully no more of those comments today!
