May need a new scale
14 Jan 2013, 16:37
So I stepped on the scale this morning because I wanted to get a weigh in with two fasts under my belt, even though it had only been 6 days (today is a fast day).

So I stepped on and it said 0.4 lb weight loss.

I stepped off and cursed the machine. Then I stepped back on and said "oh, sorry, no that's actually a 3.2 lb weight loss"

Hmm, not sure what to think there. I could go nuts and start stepping on and off all day long. But perhaps my scales are not quite reliable

How reliable were they previously? My scales are fairly consistent but will move by about 0.25lb if I keep hopping on and off them

Honestly, I hadn't been weighing myself a whole lot, and I'm not sure I ever stepped on, stepped off, stepped back on before.

They're never too far off from the doctor's office, and probably the weight of my clothes is the difference in the readings.

ETA: I think rather than go nuts weighing myself, I'll average the two readings and call it a day.

That sounds a good idea - maybe taking measurements might be another way to keep track.

Mine weigh different on different bathroom tiles!

I've put them in the kitchen which is a more solid and level floor and they're the same in each spot I tried.

I had the same problem with my scales, and then they told me I weighed 0kg! Even new batteries didn't help, so I bought new scales which are much nicer and seem more reliable wherever I put them. My old pair I had to calibrate via the solid kitchen floor (like Pixie!) to find out what I should weigh on them and then find the perfect spot in the bedroom where they read the same. Then I had to be careful not to move them even a smidgen when hoovering! These new ones are great.

This describes my scales exactly! I am working on the principle that while I don't know exactly what I weigh, I do know it is going down (as long as I don't move the scales, but I've got them lined up with the floor tiles so I know where they need to be).

We had a pair of digital scales that we'd had for ten years - they were incredibly variable, up to 2kg depending where they were on the floor and how you stood on them. Completely pointless. Got rid of them early on in the process and got an omron body composition monitor similar to the one Dr M used in the Horizon broadcast from amazon for about £45 and it's brilliant. Much more consistent and it does the fat/muscle % too. Highly recommended.

Polsonby - I wonder if you'd mind posting a link to the kind of scales you mean?

I'd be interested in that link too please :)

Just bought this one from Amazon - it's only £30 http://amzn.to/10dMnuc it's also an Omron

they have a slightly more sophisticated one which also measures skeletal muscle % and resting metabolic rate for an extra tenner:

http://amzn.to/VeXw1B which looks like the same one Dr M used in the Horizon film

Hopefully will be more accurate than my analogue scales!

I have an Omron scale too, they don't sell the one I have any more but it looks most like this. It's really good and gives you lots of information like Bmi, skeletal muscle, resting metabolism so even if your weight stays the same you can see other things getting better.

Gosh, these look interesting! Do you have to do anything with them to set them up? Or just stick 'em on the floor?

Just stick them on the floor then stand on with bare feet and hold the handle thing out in front of you, then wait while it takes it readings. Mine has a little counter on the displays, it only takes a few seconds. I think you have to have no clothes on.

Dr M had clothes on when he used them on the Horizon programme! Could have been interesting if not! ;-)
