Any fitness walkers?
13 Apr 2014, 06:49
I can't find a thread which involves people like me, walking for fitness. I get injured very easily which has always been the case no matter what size I was but I know the problems are exacerbated at my current size.

So, walking seems to be a safe low impact exercise for me. I was doing well and then got overconfident and started jogging and got myself a foot injury so I've had to have a couple of weeks off.

But I'm back to it this week. I have the 5k race for life on 1sy June which I'll be walking, and then a 10k starlight walk at the end of June. So I'll be aiming to do 2 5k walks a week with one or 2 pilates sessions which really help me stretch everything out.

Do any of you do walking for fitness or is it all fit runners around these ere parts?

@slummy.to.yummy Not exactly; like you I have dipped my toe into jogging but have to be cautious because of the aged knees so some days when the weather is poor or I feel whacked or wary of the knees I will trudge around my jogging route. However if the weather is half-way decent I would rather go for a ramble. I like the fun of navigating a walk I have never done before, from a book or worked out by me from a map - literally some pastures New.

Hello slummy to mummy, we do have a fitbit group which consists of walkers, runners and general keep fitters.
It's a group within the fit bit community on the fitbit.com site.
Come and join us. Only prob is you need a fitbit to join the leaderboard and .com group.
Here's the link to our current monthly group thread on here.

I'm a walker, I also run a bit too, but haven't felt like running for a couple of weeks.
My husband retired last summer and we now walk nearly every day, usually between 5 and 8 miles and usually via a pub.

As @carieoates said there is a 5:2 group on the Fitbit website - for which you will need a Fitbit, but you are more than welcome to pop in and chat with us there. If you decide to get a Fitbit, which is basically a pedometer on steroids, be warned it can be very addictive

I walk a lot. I do other exercise too (eg skating, cycling, various sports) but don't run. Unless it's chasing something like with soccer! The walking isnt really fitness though, it's just because I walk a lot, I do walk fast, and my fitbit claims a lots of it as "very active" although I think it may be a bit generous with that.
Come and join us in the fitbit thread, even if you're not on the fitbit leaderboard.

I also walk a lot. If I'm on my own then I try for a really brisk walk as I find it invigorating and I always feel better and fitter after it.

Hi @slummy.to.yummy

I just bought a book called "Walk Slim"

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Walk-Slim-MagBook-Health-Fitness/dp/1781060274

as I do not really want to pay to go to a gym / classes and am looking for something I can do alongside my pilates DVD

I am hoping that a combination of both activities will help me shift those pesky lbs, improve my overall health and tone me up :geek:

Good luck with your both your 5k and 10k walks :clover: :clover:

Thanks all, it's nice to know others use walking as a fitness tool too.

I don't have a Fitbit as I have a Garmin Forerunner so I'll keep using that to track miles.

I'm back to being able to do a 5k walk now after a little foot injury so I want to build on that to get me up to 10k in the next few weeks.
