07 Apr 2014, 10:13
Just wondering if they really work as a shop has opened near me and I could do with some toning after losing some weight on 5:2!

Any experiences welcomed!

They remind me of those vibrating belt machines of the 60's and 70's which were supposed to "shake off" the fat  . We laughed about them later when we knew more about exercise etc. Maybe there was something to that after all. I saw them in the gym on my recent cruise but didn't try them. They are very expensive so I may see if my gym has them (haven't darkened that door for many months  so maybe they have them now)

It's a vibration plate. Yes I have tried a power plate. You train on it eg squats same as normal but it speeds up the result. Good for improving bone density. Like any kit, you have to use it as a piece of gym equipment and not to hang clothes on :curse:

I remember those vibrating belt things, my friend's mom had one, we managed to vibrate 4 kids at once before we broke the machine.
Also remember the hiding that followed.

Yes I have tried it. Just vibrates you from top to bottom. There was one unattended in the gym in Hong kong, the kids had a fab time playing on it,then we spotted the CCTV camera. Lol
I also remember toning tables, anyone tried them. You can't beat proper exercise.

Sorry all, I should have explained myself!! Basically similar to power plates, in that you stand on a, er, vibrating plate and, er, vibrate the inches away!

Seems a bit too easy to be true so I just wondered if anyone had any experiences, good or bad. X

I think spending loads of cash on a gimmick is never as good as free diet and exercise.

They don't shake off fat! They do help with toning though. You do your exercises standing on the plate and it makes them more effective. The cheap ones do just vibrate but a good one has a drop of several centimeters on different plains that causes your muscles to lengthen and shorten rapidly. As you exercise you are also improving your balance. They are used by physios for post op toning. My son was given specific exercises to do on ours after a knee repair. They have given decent results for people with Parkinsons and MS too. As Rawkaren says, you do things like squats and lunges on the plate, you don't just stand there and wobble!

Hi @CharlieCook
Basically its a vibration plate but not the cheap run of the mile from places like argos .
Its not a quick fix...just stand there do nothing and the weight drops off....I have one a salon style paid a fair amount of money for,but because i use it daily and follow the exercises they give you it does work and tones up muscles....therefore helping you lose the dress sizes that flabelos say.Give it a go if it works for you great..I love mine and as a 'big Girl' its helped me tone my wobbly lose too. Have fun Cheryl :-)

Hi @Miffy49 how lovely to se you again, I was asking after you recently and came to the conclusion that we had lost you, not in the mislaid sense but in the sad sense. Great to see you posting again, I've missed your humour and common sense, welcome back

There is some science behind vibrating plates for bone density - the Russian space program invented the concept to keep its cosmonauts fit during year-long space-station missions, NASA were still using rubber bands for resistance training and were amazed at the Russian's durability...

I would like to try an expensive vibrating plate, being borderline for osteoporosis, but the received wisdom seems to suggest that it would not be good for arthritic hip joints, which is another of my little difficulties...
