Haven't listened to the radio 4 prog yet, back in the early 90s my sports physiology lecturers did not advocate 220-age.
What does the mcardle katch book say if you have access to a copy?
I haven't measured mine since iwas a student even though I got a measuring device with my bike garmin 4 years ago....
On Radio 4 they recommended50-70% of 220-age, with the caveat that it was not a one size fits all.
I'm 61 but during aerobic exercise my heart can rate exceed 170. I'm comfortable with this and it's a good bit over the so called maximum for me of 159. I have been exercising like this for 35 years though.
