hi guys
whilst on my way to the airport 3 and a bit weeks ago i slipped down some steps and sprained my ankle/ top of my foot
i have had it rested (led on the sunbed for 2 weeks) and am elevating it is much as possible and been wearing a elastic support thing but have not yet been to a Dr as it is getting better but WHEN CAN I START EXERCISING again??
i miss my Zumba classes and want to start the 30 day shred thingy
Should i leave at least another couple of weeks before restarting? should i go to a dr even tho its almost 4 weeks after the event?

any help / suggestions would be appreciated

jeniben
To my knowledge you should not exercise again till you feel 100% better. Still, doctor's advice is a useful thing to have in these circumstances...
Definitely see a doctor. I didn't go until 3 months after a sprain and it took a year to fully heal. While it is true they don't do much you need to rule out any serious damage.

And as an added bonus: they will tell you how long to wait before exercising again!
thanks both
will try and get in at the Dr and see what he says

Hi Jeniben

Needs to be xrayed to rule out a fracture. Its a blurred line symptom wise between a grade 3 sprain and a fracture symptom wise. I twisted my ankle falling down the stairs at home ( I was not drunk, first thing my "friends" asked!!. Didnt have it checked until 5 weeks when it wasnt improving and I had torn a tendon off the bone, pulling a bit of bone with it.....

Ortho specialist told me it would take 6 months to some right, I am at 5 moths now and he was right..

Good luck clover:
I fractured my rt ankle on a tuft of grass did a significant ankle twist. Yeoh the pain, the swelling and it was put in a cast which failed the another cast 6 weeks later when specialist said I'll operate in a month eg screws and bone graft. That scared me and i was determined to avoid such surgery it took strapping taught by a physio, ankle guard, lace up shoes and weight bearing. 8 months in total bone did realign and reknit. Good as gold now. Long story short you will know if your ankle feels weird. Ankles, like shoulders, are key joints. Well worth doing good follow up care before restressing too soon
thanks Gilly and julie
have managed to get an appt this afternoon so will see what he says then
i did a similar thing 20 years ago and badly sprained the same ankle and did all sorts of stuff (push starting hubbys car, walking to work etc) without any proper check up on it and when it eventually healed my foot pointed outwards slightly when walking, it had always been straight. This time as its getting better its pointing straight again so i guess some good has come from it :-)

anyway thanks again
