Getting Sweaty! Exercise & Fitness

Please tell me it is all water!

I have just returned from a week in a cottage in the Lake District. Over the week we built up our fitness and walking muscles, walking for between 4 and 8 hours each day, and climbing 600 to 1000m ascent. And all in a heat wave too! It was tough, but the scenery was stunning. I didn't fast, but we ate sensibly, with s few treats here and there, and only one meal out. I really didn't feel I over-indulged. On the last day we scrambled up Helvellyn, via the knife-edge route of Striding Edge. It was an amazing achievement for a 15 stone 47 year old. :)

And now I am home and have put on 6 lb!! I am still achey from the climb, and feel a bit puffy too, so I know that at least some is water, but really didn't expect to have gained that much :(. I am fasting alternate days this week....
Amazing achievement and what a beautiful view! I wouldn't stress about the gain as some of it would be fluid retention and you know what, even if it isn't fluid retention you have the right tool in fasting to help yourself get back on track.
Whatever it is, it won't be fat! Well done for getting up Striding Edge, and talk about lucky with the week of good weather!

You will be back to normal weight within a couple of days, don't worry.
Wow Heucherella,
Good for you! Looks amazing and you must be feeling so fit! Like the others say it can't be fat you've gained so you should not find it too hard to get back to losing. Keep us updated on your progress :like:
That's a brilliant achievement! :star: And such a great photo.

Ditto above comments re the weight.
Shame you jumped on the scales, bet you felt a bit let down. Forget it, it's just a blip. :clover:
Congratulations on all that walking. It sounds as if you really enjoyed yourselves and I love the photo! I wouldn't worry about the increase in weight. I agree with the others that it will be gone before you know it. Onwards and downwards!
I have a friend who recently did the cycle across Britain - 990 miles in 9 days.

She was slightly heavier at the end of the nine days than she was before it. In the following nine days, she dropped 5kg despite still having a massive appetite.

The human body can be a strange beast at times! We assumed that her body was trying to keep hold of all fuel water it could during a time of unusual physical activity and then the faster metabolism when she came back allowed the body to release it all.

Edit to say massively well done for getting up there! Looks like a fabulous day!
Don't panic, my cousin has just done the Great Glen Walk, 90 miles in 5 days and she came home 7lbs heavier!

Ballerina x
Seems unfair but bet it falls off you! Looks glorious and amazing- great achievement. You'll have the photos and memories but not the weight in no time! :D
Maybe some of it's muscle? What about your measurements?
Anyway, really well done, that's quite an achievment! I did Striding Edge aged 18 and about 8 1/2 stone. I was terrified - for anyone who doesn't know it's a very narrow path with almost sheer drops each side.
Proof that 5:2 improves our health
Well done and bet the weight will fall away ...  :victory:
Well done, looks great!

In a similar vein I remember reading an article in a mens fitness magazine entitled something along the lines of "I drank 38 pints of Guinness and lost half a stone" where the author had done a hard cycling trip in Ireland.
Heucherella, that looks so lovely. I did read somewhere (here or the fb forum) that when your body is building muscles it holds on to the water, the extra weight will soon come off again.

Well done, I wish I had a fraction of your energy to climb those hills. It must have been a glorious feeling to sit and rest on top of Helvellyn overlooking the beautiful lakeland scenery.
My daughter did/ does Ironman contests. She is always heavier when in training.

Proud Mummy moment was 2011 when I stayed up all night to catch sight of her crossing the line in the World Championship Ironman Competition in Hawaii.
Wow what an achievement - I love walking in the lakes but am quite a wimp when it comes to exposed heights and would love to do Striding Edge but just don't dare. Maybe I'd be ok if it was flat calm like your weather seems to have been (although I wouldn't want to do it in a heatwave either - what can I say I'm very particular!) - whenever we go to the lakes it's usually pouring with rain and blowing a gale!

Fabulous photo - we're on hols next week so may need to make a trip across to our lovely little mountains!
