Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Hello guys,

I am new here, only really read about 5:2 today after scouring Amazon :) I am going to start my fast on Friday - I am currently doing Slimming World, was wondering if anybody else was doing the same and whether you could incorporate the two? Without telling SW though as I don't think they would be very impressed, I feel that both diets are more lifestyle choices though and should be able to fit into together quite well. If anybody has any advice they can give to me that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you muchly and good luck to us all x :P
I am sure you could but you would probably want to eat significantly more than on your sw regime at least 2 days a week (ie the weekend!). People sometimes find they don't lose weight if their calories are too low on the days they are not fasting, but some posters on here seem to eat along the lines of 2 days under 500 cals, 3 days lowish and 2 'splurge days. You can use the weekly function of My fitness pal to make sure that your calories average out to what they were on a normal sw day. Why not give it a try and see what happens - after a few fasts you might want to give up sw altogether or find you would
prefer to go back to normal calorie counting
hi sophtwizzle- yes I was s w dieter for over two years, lost nearly 5 stone and since giving up smoking 4 years ago have put on over 2 stone again which I am hoping to loose with the 5:2- I am not going back to sw because I feel with this fast diet we are actually in charge ourselves- don't have to pay for weekly sessions and are starting on a very exciting journey which will benefit our health as well as our waistline and it doesn't mean that we have to poison our system with "low sugar" this and "low fat" that- all these are really no good for us!!
And we don't have to do any "special" shopping- just carry on as usual, fast 2 days per week and eat normally the rest- how brilliant!! Let us know how you get on and what you decide to do!! all the best- ursula
Thanks guys, considering stopping SW if this really does work for me, lost a stone on SW but I am sure after tonight with it being valentines I'd of put a stone back on (lol) :) I think my official fast days would be Mondays and Thursdays, makes more sense that way!
Hi Sophiewizzle, I'm new on here too and have just started 5:2 this week. Like you, my fast days are also Monday and Thursdays.
Look forward to hear how you get on. Good Luck hon.
Thank you - you too :) it is great to have some support!
Hi Soph. I'm new here too :-)

I think you can combine both diets but if 5:2 works for you there's probably no need! I've done SW before and after an initial loss of 1 stone I began to maintain my weight more than lose so I felt I was paying money for nothing and I left. Unfortunately I eventually put it all back on!
Good luck :-)
Hey Jenny,

Be fab if I could, I got to admit I do like SW as it keeps me in control of what I am doing having a weekly weigh in but we shall see how much of a difference fasting makes, fingers crossed to us both!
I know exactly what you mean! I'm a big fan of the myfitnesspal app. It's a good way of counting calories and keeping you on track in that way. I had a couple of weeks on 5:2 without losing anything, went back over my entries for those weeks on MFP and I had exceeded my weekly calories by overeating on my feed days. Now I keep it up to date after every meal, it keeps me on track on fast days and I can see if I'm going a bit OTT on my feeding days. Lost 2lbs this week purely from doing that :-)
Hi I also am a SW member, so far only done one week of 5:2 but find the fasting days quite easy. Not had a big weight loss this week but think as we have already been dieting will not have the water loss that other people see in the 1st week. Plan continuing with both WOE for the next month & see what happens! 5:2 to my way of thinking is easier, more flexible not to mention cheaper, though I have to say I have learnt a more health way of eating from SW which should help on feast days.
Absolutely agree, JennyH10, I'm also a big fan of MFP. I'm thinking the two will fit together perfectly. I need to be vigilant as I can tumble into binge eating too easily. Recording everything i put in my mouth is the only way for me to manage that. Have just found out today about 5:2 and this forum. Brilliant! This Aussie grandma needs all the support I can get for yet another approach to slaying the dragon. Will be fasting tues & fri, so plenty of time to get myself organised. Here's to our collective success in weeks, months, years to come.
