Sugar craving
06 Mar 2013, 13:03
I've been doing 5:2 since Christmas - I've lost the 10lb I wanted to lose and am managing to keep it off. To say I'm happy with the plan would be an understatement.

My only 'problem' is that I really crave sugar on the day after fast day. Does anyone else experience this? Could I do something different to stop it?

On fast day I save all of my 500 calories for dinner - around 400 for protein eg. chicken or fish and veg, and around 100 for a small bit of chocolate (as I start to crave sugar in the evening on fasting day).

It's not a massive problem as I am not putting on weight by indulging this craving, but it does make me choose less healthy foods than I usually would.

Any tips?

Personally, I'm trying to be more moderate than I have been with other diets. If I want some sugar, I have *some* sugar (not an entire cake, but a reasonable size serving -- not a cheesecake factory sized serving).

I also try to not have sugar on its own, because of the sugar spikes/insulin effect. Some say a small dish of ice cream is less damaging than eating plain hard candy or chocolate.

But personally, I'd let yourself have some - otherwise for me it becomes an all consuming specter.

Thanks Tracie, you're probably right. I think I'm used to diets where eating what I feel like having is forbidden!

I have had some success with very dark chocolate when the chocomunchies hit of an evening. A square of Sainsburys Peruvian Fairtrade 70% chocolate (1/10th a pack) is 55kcals and tastes amazing. Oftentimes it's enough to satisfy the craving without triggering the need to gorge, for me at any rate!
