Introduce Yourself!

Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Hello i have just joined this forum.
my name is Kim and i live in Devon.
I have afew questions,
1, how or where to you find out the cals in some foods that come fresh, or say a chicken breast ?
2, how many cals roughly is it advisable to have on fasting days/non fasting days?
3, is there an app that can help?
4, do you keep track of the foods you eat everyday, like a food diary?
5, How do you work out the cals per portion if you cook a family meal?
Hi Kim & welcome :) We're county neighbours, I'm in Dorset - used to holiday a lot in Devon when I was little :)

1. Often the packaing will give you an indication of the calories (sometimes it's on the back of the label, you can only see it when opening), but otherwise there are some great online calorie counters such as My Fitness Pal - have a look in the Resources forum for some handy links for calorie counting.

2. Fasting days should be around 500 cals for a woman, or a quarter of your normal intake if that works out as less (which is around 2000 cals for a woman, but this can be more or less depending on your activity level, height etc).

3. My Fitness Pal is supposed to be a very handy app, though personally I don't use any diet/health apps.

4. I don't keep track of my foods, I'm just more aware of the calories I'm consuming thanks to what I've learned through my fast day planning!

5. Add up the calories of all the ingredients (don't forget to include oil etc!). Weigh the entire batch, divide into portions and calculate total cals in the portion based on that. Eg I have a 'fasting lasagne' recipe I make which has around 1800 cals in the whole lasagne. It makes 6 portions (which I weigh out to keep them fairly equal) which each have 300 cals.

Hope that helps!
Hi Kim,

1. I recommend MyFitnessPal (on the web, or in App form)
2. They recommend 500 Cals on fast days for women and "eat normally" on non-fast days. Some people choose to eat a diet portion on those days, which if they're dieting normally is 'normal' for them! Others object to this.
3. See 1.
4. Yes. I think it helps. MyFitnessPal helps a lot with logging.
5. Work out the calories for the total using all the ingredients and then divide it by the number of portions it makes. In MyFitnessPal you can enter things as a 'recipe' in this way and then logging it is easy from then on.

Welcome, and good luck!
Thanks- you for your replies, not sure when i'm going to start this now as i have just recently taken on a second job, and i'm going to be working all hours, worst one will be 20.00pm til 07.30am, then i go to my other job at 11.45am!! Going to get into a routine with work then start it,
Moogie, i'm in Braunton. xx
Hi My Fitness Pal is great, very easy to use ,it helps you log what you eat on a normal eating day if you want to know,I usually work out in advance what I am going to eat on fast days ,it makes it easier for me to follow
