Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Having another go
13 Mar 2013, 06:22
I tried alternate day fasting last autumn but only managed a couple of weeks. I foudn ti very difficult on fast days in an office environment with other people pushing food at me and always something to eat hanging around. I am now working from home and am starting the 5:2 method. I've done two fast days so far which have been fine and i have lost about a kilo over this first week - i do have a lot of weight to lose. I think i will be able to continue with is system as being at home i control what food is in the house and left lying around to be snaffled up!

On fast days, I usually get hungry in the morning and then it passes. Once my body kicks into fasting mode, I am no longer tempted by food. I could sit down to a banquet and not eat the food. I grocery shop, I cook and plan for the next day, but I do not eat. Something inside my body just kicks in. It is partly a mental thing, but once you get over that hurdle, you will be able to pass up food on fast days.

Hi Jayney, what I have found is that when food is offered to me I can now say "no thanks" in my mind I can think, "I can have that if I really want it, I just don't want it".
By thinking this I drop guilt, as if I give myself permission/choice I have no reason to feel "bad" whichever way it goes.
Good luck to you x

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. I'm finding if I plan in my head exactly what I will choose if going out for coffee on a fast day and what I will say to people if they offer me food then I can get through it. I'm avoiding unexpected situations on fast days at the moment - hopefully with time I will be able to deal with the unexpected in a more automatic way. Anyway, fast day tomorrow - quite looking forward to it as then I'll weigh myself and measure my waist on Friday!! It's also a good boost to get through a fast day successfully - feels like an achievement!
