Grazing, but counting?
13 Mar 2013, 19:16
Hi,
I'm new to this, so far had 2 fast days, 1 week.
I joined a few of the girls at work who are also doing the 5/2.
One of my workmates reacon I am grazing, yesterday I had a tangerine in the middle of the afternoon,(cause my belly was growling) she thinks it will slow my weight loss, and that you are supposed to just have 500 cals split into 2 meals. Is there anyone who can help??

Many thanks

Hi Alyson and welcome!

There has not been nearly enough research into this to be able to answer your question conclusively. However, the anecdotal evidence of many of us indicates that eating throughout the day makes you hungrier. I know my first fast day was soooo hard! I was constantly hungry. And I was grazing on a pot of very low calorie soup I had made.

I have since changed my habits and now only eat dinner, because I find if I eat during the day, it seems to activate my appetite and make me much hungrier than if I had not eaten at all. Today it's 3:22 and I haven't had anything but black coffee and water today. I'm very slightly hungry, but it's not bad and it will likely go away in a few minutes.

On the other hand, I tend to eat a small lunch and then have a very wee snack at 3.30pm with the majority of my food at 5 ish.

I've now got to the point where I mostly just have a drink mid-pm but tonight I've just had a tangerine.

Whatever works for you is good, within the broad guidelines, it depends on whether you want to strictly fast for the health benefits or lose weight or for it to be sustainable. You have to balance all the info and make it work for you.

Thanks for the feed back, I guess I will find out tomorrow if I have had a weight loss and I will probably find out what works for me in the next few weeks

Thanks

Hi Alyson, really pleased you asked this question because I am new to fasting too (5th fast today) and was wondering the same thing about grazing.

My first couple of fasts I tried eating just 2 meals during the day but had several moments where I thought I would faint. Today I put 100 cals worth of Shreddies in a Tupperware pot, and nibbled one or two when i felt the hunger pangs. I made them last most of the day. This has worked well for me as I never felt desperately hungry and didn't feel faint either. I am wondering though if I SHOULD feel the hunger to get the benefits of fasting. I think I will try to find something between the two next week - feeling the hunger as far as i can but partially grazing just at the point where I think I might faint.

Let me know how you get on - I am loving this forum as it is really interesting hearing about everyone's different ways of coping.

I think the great thing about 5:2 is that you stick to the principles and do what feels right for you.

I am having breakfast, lunch and dinner and still seeing results.

Fast days do get easier though, and the hunger pangs easier to deal with.

Good luck.

I defiantly agree with eating the 2 or 3 meals during a fast day, why feel like u gonna faint that to me makes me feel I wanna ram the most calorific treat I cud find into gob, I believe the best way is to eat little but often therefore never truly feeling ravenous and more Likly to quit. At end of 4th fast day and hope for good results on weight day (Saturday am), good luck all fellow fasters

Hi All,
Well I lost 1.5lb this week, so I think maybe my way to go is 2 meals but a small snack when I am ravenously hungry, I will be a happy bunny if I can do this every week. This week my fast days will be saturday and tuesday. Gilly, I love the idea of 100cals of something like shreddies. I am gonna keep that in mind!
Good Luck

I think it's better to have a small snack than fall off the wagon completely. As time goes on, it mostly gets easier and then you can be more strict or not, it's up to you.
