I'm so glad to have found this forum. I'm originally from upstate NY, but lived in NJ after marriage, and am now in the Middle East for a few years for my husband's work.
I first read about the 5:2 diet in a recent article in the NY Times. I was amazed because, as a Muslim, this is exactly the diet we are supposed to follow. We are encouraged to fast from before sunup to after sundown on Mondays and Thursdays, following the example of the Prophet, in addition to Ramadan of course. Pretty cool similarities.
So in some ways, fasting will be easy for me, since we are allowed to drink fluids on 5:2. In other ways, the 5:2 fast will be more difficult, since I will have trouble with limiting dinner calories and not eating until the next morning. Usually, after sundown when doing a Ramadan fast, I go a little nuts on the food-- which is why I never really lose weight in Ramadan!
A little more about myself, I'm a 30 year old mother of 2 boys, aged 4 and 2, and would love to lose that extra 10 pounds that has been hanging on since delivery. Also, with diabetes in the family (I had gestational diabetes during my first pregnancy), I think the 5:2 would be great for my blood sugars.
Thanks for having me on board, looking forward to going through this experience with everyone.
