Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Blood tests

Did anyone do bloods at the start of their diet to measure any changes in their glucose, cholesterol and IGF1 levels?

Yes , I'm doing this as a way to lose weight but with my family history I'm also really interested in lowering my risk of high BP, stroke and cancer.

I'm wondering if my GP would be willing if I asked or if I'd need to pay to get them done

I think IGF-1 is a bit specialist and you'll end up paying for that. Some of the pharmacies do freeebies from time to time - Sainsbury's were doing cholesterol and blood sugar at the end of Jan, ASDA advertise free tests for those at risk, etc.

The GP willingly did bloods for hubby and me back in November when we started this WOL. He said he'd re-do them for us about 3 months later to see what difference, if any, we'd achieved. We want to give it a good chance (bearing in mind Christmas was feasting) - so we plan to go back in early May. I'll post results at the time. He'd not heard about 5:2 - so when we go back I'm taking him a copy of the book. Definitely go and ask your GP, in my opinion, they should be encouraging you to do anything that stands a chance of improving health - he can only say no - but am sure he won't
