Hypothyroidism & Fasting
22 Mar 2013, 17:53
Hello, This is my first week and so far so good. I love the concept and it fits in perfect with my lifestyle. I do have hypothyroid and take synthroid daily. Does fasting days have an effect on thyroid? Should I eat my 500 calories at one meal or spread them throughout the day? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Eileen and welcome! :)

There a quite a few members with thyroid issues, and a number of threads. You could try this one as a starting point.

Hi and welcome!! I'm hyperthyroid without medication. After almost two months of fasting, my medication had to be adjusted because I had gone hypothyroid. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not. Do you still have a thyroid? Was it ablated or just slow?

I too have a thyroid that forgets to do its job (hypothyroid). I have put all my hopes on fasting since nothing else worked for me!!!

Hi Eileen, I am hypo and take Levothyroxine daily. I have been doing 5/2 for around 7 weeks now and have only lost 4 lbs (2 lbs first week, 1 lb in the second and third week and nothing for last 3 weeks). I usually drink water throughout the day and save all my calories up for a small meal in the evening.
Be warned if you are hypo the weight loss can be frustratingly slow for some.

"frustratingly slow" is underestimation!!! :-)

Eileen ~ I'm new also, just joined today but started my new eating plan a week ago. Can't offer you much advice, but I did notice that I felt better when I waited until around lunch time to eat on my fast day.

First fast day I had oatmeal around 9 am, and had my grilled chicken salad around 4:30pm. Second fast day I had soup around noon, and grilled chicken salad around 6pm. I didn't get as hungry the 2nd day. I don't know if it was the waiting until lunch to eat, or if my body was getting used to the idea of "fasting". I'm not much of a breakfast eater anyway, so I will continue the second eating plan this next week to see how I do.

I'm also hypothyroid, and find any kind of weight loss plan goes at a snails pace, if at all, for me. Hopefully this plan will work for all of us.
