The FastDay Forum

Introduce Yourself!

Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

I'm 59 and have been overweight since a bout with cancer in my '40s. I've tried all kinds of diets - would lose weight only with great difficulty, then gain it back plus. Finally gave up on "diets" and decided to eat healthy (gave up dairy) which has worked at keeping my weight stable for about 5 years.

HOWEVER I am about 70 lbs overweight and although my blood work is good (cholesterol, sugar) my joints are starting to wear out.

I bought the book 5:2 and am very optimistic. The theory and science seems to make sense. I've done 4 fasts in 2 weeks and found it to be surprisingly easy. Best of all I've managed to lose 4 pounds.

This website is wonderful, I'm so glad I found it on a google search. I find drinking a 200 calorie glucerna shake around noon and eating a 300 calorie healthy meal around 7pm works best for me so far. I am amazed that despite the fasting I do not feel ravenous upon waking post fast day, and my appetite has not changed. Karen

Welcome, Karen!

This is a wonderful forum. Lots of nice people and wonderful support. Stick with the diet and it does work. I have been reading lots about it and following the boards and what I see is a lot of people in your situation (with 40 plus pounds to lose) having a great deal of success with the diet.

What I like about the diet is it gives me a sense of control over what I eat. I am not just eating and eating and living for food all of the time. I have a few days off here and there.

Best of luck to you!

Welcome to the forum, Karen, and the wonderful world of 5:2! Congratulations on your initial weight loss. You must be delighted! There are a number of people on the forum with similar amounts to lose and they seem to be making good progress, while realising that they are in for a long haul.

So glad you found us because I have found the forum really useful since my husband and I started at the end of January. There are lots of very helpful people on here and it is the place to come for advice, support, information or just to celebrate! Should your weight loss slow, there will be someone to commiserate or encourage you to keep going. It has been a revelation to me and, after years of yo-yo dieting, I really feel that this will be a permanent solution to losing my weight and keeping it off.

Keep us informed on how you get on and use the Progress Tracker - it is wonderful to see that line on the graph going downwards! Good luck on your weight loss journey!
