New Starter!

Hello all!

My Mum has been reading The Fast Diet book and recommended I try it - so here I am! I had my first fast day on Tuesday and I am having another one day. I'm doing the 5:2, I have seen that some people are trying 4:3 but I think that might be a bit much for me! I really love my food!

So far so good - though it isn't even midday yet so wish me luck!

Does any one have any tips on good websites or places where I can find out the calorie content of things for my fast days? I don't want to accidentally go over because I don't know how much fruit and veg I can actually have!

Thanks!

Hi there
I'm new to this too - 2nd fast day today!
I've started using a calorie counter app on my phone (samsung google play store) - it gives me the calories for a whole range of foods and I can log what I've eaten over a day and get a total. I've used this on my feast days too - just to check I'm not going overboard.
Good luck  Sue

Hi just starting my journey after being on the wrong road for a while. Looking forward to getting weight back on track. Question though-do I need to read the book to follow this diet. Have just done online research. Does the book add much?

I haven't read the book. My Mum is reading it now but she is an avid reader of non-fiction, whereas I find non-fiction reading hard to sustain! I'll you know if she tells me anything from the book that would be useful to share!

And thanks for the app tip, Sue! I have a Samsung phone as well so I think I will do that.

Good luck all.

Hi Lel - you don't need to read the book particularly. Many of us have been doing this since before the book came out. I found it an interesting read and a refresher of the original Horizon documentary, and there are some recipes in it - but it's far from essential. You can find all the info you need for free by asking around here!

Thanks, I have reserved the book at the library anyway. But there is a wait for it. I've read various bits on this site and I think I have an idea of how I'm going to proceed. If I share my plan and the reasons behind it perhaps someone can advise if I'm ok doing it that way. I would rather eat nothing all day then have meal in the evening with the family. I usually have people telling me I should eat breakfast ( most important meal of the day etc) but I'm satisfied with a cup of tea. Eating makes me want to eat more if that makes sense. Starts a chain reaction for me. So will fast from last meal or snack night before. Til around 5-6 and eat with family. I read a lot about eating 500cal through the day. Is that just to keep hunger at bay? Or another reason? Thanks for any suggestions

I find if I hold off all morning and then have a hard boiled egg and then hold off (with only tea / coffee and lots of water), the end of day meal is really satisfying. I think your plan is sound and if it works for you go for it. I'm into by 4th week of this and love it - don't look at my progress tracker though - I entered the wrong weight so it looks like I've gained, but I've lost 5 pounds so far and I've been super naughty on my feed days and have done "no" exercise. Hubby and I are going to start a 2 mile walk each day and maybe cut out some of the excess eating we have been doing on the feed days. Good luck!

Hi Lel, people have different preferences. I find it easiest to fast from dinner to dinner, also because not eating anything earlier on a fast day means I can usually eat the same dinner with the rest of the family. I have been doing this from the beginning and it works well for me. I think it's important to do what you feel most comfortable with, after all this is more a way of life than a diet. Good luck to you!

That's exactly what a great deal of us have found - as soon as we eat, we feel all the more hungry. So, there are now quite a few of us who save our calories for a nice big fasting day dinner, having fasted from dinner the night before.

That whole breakfast being so important thing is a bit of a myth, I believe it came about around the time that Mr Kellogg went into business! I've been fasting in this way for months now and have had no ill effect from missing breakfast and lunch, living on water all day until dinner :)

Others prefer to split their calories between 2 or 3 meals (or even grazing all day) on a fast, and if that works for them then that's wonderful - but I couldn't do it, I'd feel too hungry!

Thanks everyone. When analysing the word breakfast. It basically means to break fast. So anytime you eat after a fast is a breakfast. We've just grown accustomed to calling it out morning meal.

hi Bonnie, I noticed you said "Don't look at my progress tracker though.." Bonnie there is no public info as none of your stats are on view and no-one knows your current weight, BMI, target weight, how you are progressing, or your location. If you want to post any info you have to go into Progress Tracker and choose the Edit option - there are three choices, private for your eyes only, or you can choose to let others see your current weight, starting weight and BMI but not to view your progress, and lastly you can choose to link it to public view so that if someone for example has a similar weight to yours they can see how much weight you are losing on a weekly or monthly basis, depending upon how often you choose to weigh and enter your stats. It's up to you but I really appreciate when people post their stats  I find it so encouraging when I see that some people gain, go long stretches not losing and then there is a lovely downward dip. Good luck on the journey :clover:
