Getting started

I am a little anxious about whether I can actually do the fasting, but excited about the potential if I can make it work. I have 1 question. Is there anything to do to prepare for the first couple of fasts to make it easier, i.e. cut down on carbs and sugar for some period before starting the 5:2?

Hi & welcome!

Some people find that having less carbs the night before fasting makes the fasting day easier. Myself, I just eat as normal on a feed day, but no snacks after dinner if I'm fasting the next day.

Just be sure to plan what you're going to eat on your fast day so you know exactly what calories you are having and when. Maybe even hold a few in reserve for a 'snack' of some kind (low cal soup/hot choc/pot of sugar free jelly!!) in case you struggle on your first days. It gets easier with each fast and you'll soon know how to deal with it.

Many of us find it easier to go without food for as long as possible before consuming our 500/600 cals as one meal - though this may be daunting for new 5:2ers a lot of us realised within a month or so that eating anything during the day kick starts the appetite and makes the day much harder. But you need to find what works for you :)

Try to keep busy and make sure you drink plenty of water (2 litres or more is a good idea!)

I will minimize carbs tonight. Holding off for one 600 cal meal makes sense -- if I can make it. Glad to have this forum for info and encouragement.
Thanks!
