Nice to meet you

Hi there!

So I first came accross 5:2 after seeing Michael Mosley on The Sarah Millican Show a couple of weeks ago where he mentioned it. Gone and watched the Horizon documentary on the internet, researched it a bit, came accross this forum and read your posts. And decided it sounds like it might be something I can stick to for the long haul.

I'm 30 and I have been ill for about 3 years, and haven't worked for almost 2 years. I can't walk without a stick or crutch, sometimes require a wheelchair. I get a lot of joint pain and headaches and fatigue, so I rarely go out by myself and can't do a great deal of exercise.

Prior to becoming ill I had worked full time since leaving school. My last job was as a conductor, so i was on my feet all the time moving around. So finding myself movement restricted and almost housebound has taken a lot of adjusting to.

I'm 5'5 tall, before I was ill, I was around 14 stone. Since becoming ill and less mobile, I have been putting on weight, touching 18 stone when I turned 30 last year. I have been dieting via calorie counting since September 2012 and now I am about 16 stone 9 pound. But due to my lack of mobility and sluggish metabolism, it has been difficult, restrictive, not to mention boring, I love food!

So I'm in this for the health benefits that come from the 5:2, plus the benefits of the weight loss. And once I can shed more weight I should be able to move around easier and have less pain in my joints, which in turn means it will be easier to exercise them to strengthen them.

Hi Roxy, you have done so well! Loosing weight must be so difficult with limited mobility. You will find a great deal of support on this forum. No doubt for you the fast days will be tough at first as distracting yourself will be harder. I don't have any mobility problems myself now, but did have an operation on my spine a few years ago so I do understand where you're coming from. My kindle is a great distraction & I read a lot. So good luck! It does get easier and just remember when fasting, you can have that treat the next day. Works for me!

Hello I started the 5:2 Diet 2 weeks ago after reading an article about it and then reading the book. I am 53 and want to lose about a stone but having gone through the menopause am finding losing weight much harder than a few years ago! Also I have restricted mobility due to a back problem but I am able to cycle so use an exercise bike regularly. But having followed the diet for 2 weeks I'm disappointed to see I haven't lost any weight - has anyone else found this? I've read about people's weight falling off straight away, so am feeling a bit fed up! Will persevere though.

Hello Roxy. I'm new too - I've posted an introduction - but sympathise with your mobility problems as I have a back problem which restricts how much exercise I can do. Luckily I can cycle though. It sounds like you have done well already. It makes sense to want to reduce the weight on your joints, that's how I feel as my back is worse if I carry a heavy bag, so extra weight has the same effect I suspect.

Good morning! And thank you for the nice welcome.

So it's Monday morning and I just had my first weigh-in, I've bought some new scales that are digital, so more accurate than my old mechanical. They claim I've lost 2 kilos, and my tape measure claims I've lost 1cm, whoo-hoo!

My first 2 fast days haven't been perfect, but it's still a learning process for my stomach and brain! My first was Tuesday, consumed about 700cals, but I did hold out until about 5pm. My second was Sunday, but I didn't cope as well, and consumed about 1000cals.

As for side-effects, had some light-headedness, but nothing severe. The worst thing actually has been mood-swings, especially feeling weepy Sunday afternoon, which immediately sorted itself out after eating. So I take this as a good sign because it means my blood-sugar level hit a low, which is the whol idea to make the body burn the stored fat.
