Gained a pound
10 Feb 2013, 09:09
Hello all
I've just completed my first week, and I counted calories on my fast days really carefully. I was dispirited to see that I'd gained a pound when I weighed myself. Has this happened to anyone else? It's a bit demotivating.

I gained a pound last week (not my first week of the diet though) but lost 5lbs this week so please don't give up. It could be a hormonal thing.

I'd give it a bit longer as I think there can be variations in weight through the process. It is dispiriting though - how annoying!

Hello Jillea. I started 2 weeks ago and like you haven't lost anything even though I weighed everything and going on the exercise bike 5 times a week. But the nice thing about this forum is that you can hear that other people have similar experiences and then go on to lose weight. I'm definitely sticking with it. I think I'm going to be more careful what I eat on non fast days and see if that helps. Good luck.

Hi i have just completed week four doing 5 2. I was disappointed the first couple of weeks as no real change & I had been careful on fast days & not overindulgent on feast days. I am however now 3lb down which is a good sign. I feel better & am sleeping better. I started this for the health benefits as well as the fact i need to lose 3 stone. I intend to keep going & hope you do too.Good luck to us!

I'm a bit of a serial dieter and many years ago I went through a phase of weighing myself every day whilst severely restricting calories and exercising. It worked (temporarily) but I learned a few things about how weight can vary quite considerably from day to day and week to week. For example weighing myself the day after eating a few saltier foods invariably showed my weight as higher even though there was no possible way I could have been heavier - I presume water retention to cope with the salt came into play.

I also charted my weight loss and I found that some weeks I lost a fair bit, and some weeks I lost virtually nothing or sometimes put a little on. There was little change in my diet week to week or the exercise so there shouldn't have been any difference in weight loss but there was...

I guess all that rambling is just to say don't worry, the body does odd things and there will be plenty of reasons why you haven't lost weight. Whilst is is demotivating you need to try and take a longer view :) ... and think of the other benefits you're getting regardless of whether you lose weight...

Hello James. That's interesting re the salty foods and water retention. I'm definitely sticking with this, not just for the need to lose weight but like you say, the long term health benefits. Thanks for keeping my hopes up!

Thanks, everyone, for all your encouragement. I'll certainly keep going and give it at least 4 weeks, and I'll start weighing myself only once a week. Good luck to you all.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you jilea. Completed my first week yesterday, weighed in and I'd gained a pound. I was absolutely gutted. I measured round my tum and no inch loss either. I'm also going to give it four weeks and see what happens.
