I suppose part of my problem is, I have been on diets for so long, and,( Atkins apart- not one for vegetarians) they usually stress low fat, so for more years than I care to remember I have restricted fats - not eating reduced fat foods, I avoid all processed foods, but just restricting those I do eat. So, for example, butter as a treat, cheese as a garnish. I am in for some serious rethinking here!

Yep. Have a look at Paleo for the ideas. Basically you do need to eat enough, if cals not from carbs, has to be fats as lots of veggies will be too much volume.

We have protein, fats, carbs and alcohol as calorie sources. We an only utilise a certain amount of protein so it's usually 15% up to max 35% of the diet.
If you want to restrict carbs to say 100g (400 calories) that's going to be 20-25% of your calories, so by subtraction you need a fair bit of oils and fats (or alcohol !).
The Dukan diet emphasises low fat and is consequently pretty low calorie as it's low carb too. Atkins likes fat so calories can be higher.
Alcohol it is then! No, seriously, I will up my fat intake slightly. Unfortunately, alcohol makes me very hungry both while I'm drinking it, and the following day, so I save my wine for one night a week.
