Too confusing for me but the intelligent here might enjoy this. What I understood from an interview on the radio was that calorie restriction in mice lead to good changes is gut microbiota, leading to a longer life span.
The scientist doing the study said it "should" therefore mean the same for us humans. So another reason to fast.
Thanks for posting that, Wineoclock. My eyes glaze over faced with technical writing but perhaps our more scientifically minded friends on the forum could provide a more easily digestible (ha ha) summary.

The message seems to be a really positive one and of great interest to me, with my digestive problems (flatulence particularly, deeply embarrassing!). I've been fasting now for nearly 6 months and, now I think about it, maybe it has helped with the problem but, in the absence of objective evidence, perhaps that's just wishful thinking.
Those mice were under life long caloric restriction. It's not clear how applicable that is to intermittent fasting humans. Still... Interesting.
Wishful thinking then. Sigh!
I have a really grumbly gut usually set off by I reckon wheat but since IF I have been cruising with no gut symptoms, as well I have psoriasis which has meant I have patches of this skin condition on my elbows since my early thirties usually I wear sleeves to cover same. There is talk that psoriasis is due to increased gut permeability and inflammation. My psoriasis is gone for first time. Is it 5:2 IF and why? My mind boggled reading the article Wineoclock so it would be good to have someone here form our nerdy section convey to us via KISS principle the gist of your fantastic article
