Ready Meals
28 Jan 2013, 16:44
Guys, is there ready meals out there that are more popular than others as I'm lazy and want to try them on my fast days the ones with all the calories in one serving so u know exactly what's in there without weighing etc etc and are they worth buying?

Also on my fast days is there really popular foods that fill u up and are good for protein and are the most popular no matter what the price.

All replys appreciated.

Hi Dano - Waitrose had a good selection of ready meals around 350 calories and I think Marks and Spencer do good ones too with lots of protein. Im having a Waitrose one tonight as like you I think its easier to keep an eye on the total calorie intake when someone else is doing the counting for you!!

Thanks Debbie & Ursula for the heads up and quick reply I shall be treating myself with a few of these meals now and again as it is easier just diving in from work and putting them in the oven?

I've never dieted in my life but as I'm getting towards the big 60 and putting on a bit of timber thought I would try it out as it seems doable ...

Is there many men trying it out on the forum.

Hi Dano, sadly the men are in the minority here on the forum but I think there are a lot more out there following the plan in secret ;-)

I think so Caroline, but can you answer this one...

If Dr Michael says the amount for females is 500 and 600 for males on a fast day is a quarter of the intake how does he know that my intake on non fast days is 2400 !!! Probably a daft question but my intake could be 1600 on one day so shouldn't my fast day be 400 ? I'm probably not putting this across right but do you know what I mean?

Yeah, I know what you mean. The 2400 is the recommended calorie intake for the average man (height and ideal weight not appetite ), so a quarter of that for your fast day is 600. If you don't think you're average there is a link in the essential links post in the resources section to a daily energy expenditure calculator. You put in your height, age, weight and activity level and it tells you how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. Divide that by a quarter to get your fast day allowance.

It's not what you actually have on the feed days, it's what you ought to have ;-)

I tried that Caroline but I must've put t in wrong?

I'm 5"8 aged 58 84kilogrammes medium exerciser and look like George Clooney... Alright I lied about the Clooney bit but hey...

How does that work it Caroline... Hope you don't mind me asking.

Really appreciate your help.

You have to put it all in in metric or all imperial! I make 5 ft 8 to be 1.72m - that gives approx 2300 cals if you exercise on 1 to 3 days a week or 2600 if 3 to 5 days. So it seems you are near enough to average to stick to the 600 on fast days.

Another man-type trying the diet here. :)

Re ready meals, how about making up some meals that you know the calories of and sticking them in the freezer? I'm hoping to create some things like curries, measure the portions out, freeze them and then reheat them on fast days. It'll be better for me and pretty easy to keep tabs on the calories. Lots of healthy eating/cookery books available now, and they give you the calories per portion.

Hi Danny, I know from experience that sometimes I need something quick and easy when I am on a new eating plan like this. I love cooking home made meals with lots of veggies for the whole family, but sometimes by the time I am home from work and cleared up I just cannot be bothered.

Last night on my first fast day for dinner I had Youngs fish in butter sauce (which can just pop in microwave) and they are only just over 100 calories per bag. And I had with it a Birds eye steam fresh bag of vegetables. Again, just microwave in a few minutes and was about 70 cals for the one with carrots, sweetcorn and peas.

I tend to use microwave meals a fair bit for lunch, and always bring a bag of steam microwave veggies to have with them as they are not always very filling. Today (non fast day) I have a weight watchers microwave cottage pie meal, and a bag of birds eye steam veggies (broccoli, cauliflower and carrots). Even though they aren't as good as home cooked it is less calories than most sandwiches at about a total of 300 cals and I enjoy a hot meal and find it more satisfying than a sandwich.

Hi guys

I use the MyfitnessPal app (available online too)! On there you can add your own recipes and it counts up all the calories and nutrition per portion for you.

With this in mind i make batches of curries, quorn chilli, low fat burgers, bolognaise, shepherds pie, tarka dahl, stews.... then freeze them.

Cheaper than buying ready meals and making less processed meals means your own food will keep you fuller for longer with the added benefit of being more healthy for you.

My mum and i do different batches of food and give half the batch to each other for the freezer.

I do buy the odd ready meal for a quick win if i don't have anything in the freezer however with MyFitnessPal giving me the averages of all my meals, i'm pretty good now. :D

Hi Perse, this is what I do, make a large batch of veg stew, weighing everything that goes in, then I blend it for soup (or leave it chunky) when cooled I ladle it into freezer bags and calculate the cals per bag...I normally do all the prep on feed days, then all you have to do is defrost and reheat on fast days, my last batch worked out 150 cals per portion...it works for me as I'm trying to avoid processed foods and I know exactly what's in my food
You could easily do the same for curry etc then just weigh/add your rice.... Good luck :P
