@Candicemarie you have made my Sunday morning :-) a) Podgy Article hahahahaha b) keeping up the chicken-n-veg diet LOL

On a more serious note the only person who commented negatively on fasting was my new (and no longer) doctor. Well WE (as in the royal we?) Wouldn't recommend that. What a joke. Everyone else can see it works, they are more concerned I might have some illness  inspiring the weight loss

ferretgal wrote: You are all great! It kinda makes me laugh now, all this freakiness about hunger; being hungry isn't pathological. In fact, I've come to rather enjoy a bit of genuine hunger--which I now know I seldom felt before 5:2, at least when not dieting--as seasoning and positive anticipation of a meal, whether on a light or normal day. And I now very seldom "pre-feed" before a meal, I know that being hungry isn't a problem and I won't overeat or pass out.

@ferretgal Im totally with you on the feeling genuine hunger sentiment. In the years before I started 5:2 .. ( the SBS program featuring the BBC Horizon was Monday night, 22nd April 2013) I never ever felt hungry other than when I was away from a shop or my fridge. I just ate and ate if I was even only mildly hungry. So when I am indeed hungry now , i dont suffer, I relish in it knowing it's doing me good.

The one statement i need proper clarification on for my own curiousity from that forum poster.

"this diet isn’t recommended for .... people with diagnosed diabetes"

I know its been covered before. Whats the one or two sentence response to that.

and did she mean diabetes I or diabetes II

Pretty sure i had a friend who is diabetic that said the same thing

If you're taking certain diabetes meds, especially insulin, then fasting is tricky but not impossible. So type 1 or type 2 treated with meds other than metformin need to be able to monitor and adjust the meds finely to be able to fast safely.

Treading very carefully here. No short response seems possible.

Page 116 in Dr Mosley's FastDiet book: "There are certain groups for whom fasting is not advised". Type 1 diabetics are included in this list..."

Furthermore Varady, and Volek/Phinney among others agree. This contrasts dramatically with their positions regarding type 2.

However, regarding type 1 diabetes, after just a little more digging there are these:

https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/ ... -diabetes/

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet/5-2-inte ... -diet.html

and:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17367310

And multiple references in the above to the following written by a long term type 1 diabetic doctor:

http://www.diabetes-book.com/

So no simple answers for a high risk situation. And most certainly no experimenting without a doctor's participation.

Thought I'd share the following as it might make you laugh (or cry, or bang your head on the desk). A girl at work, who I've only ever seen consuming coffee, malt loaf and protein shakes, asked me how my 5:2 was going. I explained I was taking a weight loss holiday for a bit, and she said "good, I'm glad you're not doing 5;2 any more, it's really not good for you".

Worse than a diet of coffee, malt loaf and protein shakes?! I just smiled at her. There were no words.

AS I've lost 4 stone people do notice I've lost weight and I am honest about it by saying alongside 5:2 I have also changed my eating habits. I am quite lucky in that MIL and SIL both do some kind of fasting and are very supportive. I haven't had many negative comments from the people who's opinions matter to me everyone else can get knotted

I loved the article and totally agree, but since I am working full time, I always schedule my fast days on working days. I think I would probably (ditch my fast - re-schedule) and have breakfast with my friends (more often it is brunch anyway) and skip lunch to stay under TDEE. Because I am maintaining, people think I should or do not need to fast or do IF.

I do talk to some people about 5:2 and explain that with age and due to my height, my TDEE (I explain it as daily calorie needs) has decreased to 1400 cals, which leaves me with two meals a day at most. I choose to skip breakfast because that is the easiest for me as it is difficult to always keep to such low calorie intake and fasting is a great leveller.
