I have only told my husband that I'm doing this but he is so used to me water/juice fasting he didn't mither about it,well not in words anyway just 'the look' that says Ah! yet another diet. I think using the word 'fast' is a bit misleading as I eat every day & I think describing it as such can freak people out a bit so prehaps for all thoes who want to tell their friends/family think about leaving out the word 'fast'and prehaps you will get a better reaction.

A few people at work know about me doing this; most are supportive but some are total cynics. Two others are doing it as well. My boss has lost a ton of weight in past couple of years - she looks fabulous. Did it through sensible eating and mega amounts of exercise.
This works for me because I see it as a way of life forever. The cynics can continue being cynical as far as I'm concerned! They make me even more determined to show them I can and will achieve my goal of losing 3 stone!

Seriously beginning to wish I'd kept my mouth shut. One of my friends is doing the OTHER 5:2 diet. You know the one, diet for two days and then do the mediterranean diet the other five. Almost got into an augument trying to explain that if you don't normally eat the mediterranean way, then you are actually dieting 7 days a week. By that I mean you are having to organise your shopping list and plan meals 7 days a week. The beauty, I think, of MM's diet is that for the 5 days a week, you do what you normally do. If that IS the med diet then fine, but if it isn't then ... no probs.
OMG, not the OTHER diet!!!
My 5:2 is better than your 5:2
No it isn't
Yes it is
No it isn't
I think it's great that there are all these approaches to intermittent fasting appearing and they are all moving in the same general direction. It will be fascinating to see how this all evolves. I doubt in ten years time many of us will be doing Dr M's 5:2 in its current form, because I think something better will have come along. But that will be a development from this and from the other approaches that are out there, and we will all have benefited in the meantime from this 5:2, and that 5:2, and the other 5:2...
Sorry couldn't resist another MP moment:

it was my doctor who asked me if I had tried this diet and told me to google it she said it sounds good give it a try.so I'm sure she wouldn't tell me if thought it unhealthy.. I am not very mobile at the moment and find it hard to shift the pounds and I am also giving up smoking.. didn't get weighed for a few weeks this is my 4th week got weighed last week and have lost 6 lb haven't been able to exercise or walk much so very pleased.. doesn't feel like a diet I am not that hungry on fast days and not eating as much as I used to on days I can eat but eating plenty and having treats...
I'm another one who had liked keeping it secret. A colleague was pestering me about my weight loss (I've lost 4 stone: 3 on WW, 1 on 5:2) so I fessed up about 5:2 but did say I didn't really like talking about my weight loss, as it seems as soon as other people notice I put it all back on again! But my colleague appears to have told everyone in the building, as I'm getting lots of questions in the staff room about 5:2, from people I barely know. Fortunately nobody has been negative about it (to my face at least).
hi haven't read this entire thread, just wanted to pop in. My husband and I have decided to do this for 8 weeks and record our results before we shout from the rooftops about it. We aren't keeping it a secret if anyone asks, but I am sick of having to defend my life choices to people. It happened when I had my husband take my last name instead of taking his, when we decided to have a home birth instead of hospital, when we decided to only have one child, we think a lot about these things and do what we think is best for us and they are nobody else's business! Why do people insist on fighting you on doing what you think is best for yourself! Urgh. Rant over
I suppose theres something to be said for not being able to go out to work. At least I don't have work colleagues to worry about! My family don't know and I've been doing it since the beginning of Feb. They are just so used to there being things I can't eat that they never take any notice. I fast during the day and they are no wiser as they are all out. In the evening on my fast days I just have a modified evening meal.
Someone earlier in the thread sauid that one argument had been that theres no supporting evidence. Surely we are becoming the evidence!

It does seem like since I've started this people are bringing in cakes and muffins and donuts to the office a lot more than they were before! maybe I didn't notice... But I've actually found it's pretty easy to resist.
I am following the Mediterranean diet since I was able to chew, LOL!
I too am following this woe undercover. I have been on every diet invented plus some I made up myself so I dare not tell anyone other than my husband about the Fast Diet. By following this eating plan, I was able to eat the ice cream cake at my son-in-laws birthday party and am going to enjoy all the goodies next week at my granddaugher's birthday. I usually fast on Monday but her birthday is on that day so I will just move my fast day ahead. That's not possible on the average diet. I finally found something that works for me.
I'm another closet 5:2er. I have the feeling people will think I'm nuts not eating two days a week and I've seen a few comments from other people that mirror your experience BluDiamond - people seem to want to sabotage those successfully losing weight. Hopefully with good intentions rather than spitefully/ jealously, but either way, I don't want to court that.
I've told my husband, who totally gets it but can't do it himself. He's trim anyway because he's a gym rat, but would have liked to do it for the health benefits. Some people just can't face only eating a very small meal/ nothing twice a week. We're the lucky ones who can do it!
The only thing is that I'd like to be able to share the positives about 5:2. Partly why I joined this forum. Maybe when people realise 5:2 isn't just a fad, people will be more open to it.

I think that I will tell a few people (people I know they want to lose weight and aren't successful) only after I reach my goal and manage to not regain the weight.
