Tangerines
21 Mar 2013, 17:32
In the Fast Diet book, Mimi talks about Tangerines containing high concentrations of Nobiletin, a compound that 'protects from obesity and atherosclerosis' (Page 109).
Does anyone know if other similar fruits, such as Clementines, Satsumas etc offer the same help? (I think they're part of the Mandarin Orange family from what I can gather from Google)
Although I've bought Tangerines, the ones I have are quite sour and a pain to peel, whereas M&S have another fruit, which looks identical, called Easy Peelers and they are lovely and sweet and as the name suggests, very easy to peel.

Clementines and Satsumas are types of tangerines like MacIntosh and Granny Smith are types of apples. There are also tangelos which are a hybrids of grapefruit and tangerines.

the fruit that looks identical probably is other than the "breed" of it. Easy peelers is just an extra label to let you know these ones peel open easily. Some are bred to pen more easily

Interesting review here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3369495/

And it's not just tangerines:
The consumption of 1-2 grapefruits/day significantly reduced cholesterol and triglyceride in hypercholesterolemic patients suffering from coronary artery disease

Thanks very much for the link Caroline, it's very interesting and it seems that there definitely are benefits to be had from citrus fruits.
Although misguided in lots of ways, perhaps the people who brought out the Grapefruit Diet way back in the 70's, were actually on to something after all!

Yes. I'll definitely be having a tangerine for dessert in future and may even have a grapefruit for breakfast!

warning: grapefruit interacts with many medications including statins. If you are taking medications please check it is ok before including grapefruit in your diet
