I've finished my first week of 5:2 and have lost 1.5 pounds. Now that may not seem spectacular to anyone, but it is to me. Why? Because I lost that bit of weight with only two fast days. I do a 24 hour fast from 7pm to 7pm. I did not count calories on feast days, just ate what and how much I wanted.
What it comes down to is that I skipped four meals: two breakfast and two lunch, ate like I wanted the rest of the time and not only did not gain weight, but lost a little! That's spectacular to me!
