Got to rethink my strategy!
26 Mar 2013, 10:04
Has anyone found that the way they eat their allocated calories on a fast day affects their weight loss? Yesterday, I couldn't face saving all my calories for one big meal in the evening (which I usually do)and spread them over the day. Today, when I weighed myself, I had lost only 1 lb (instead of the two which I normally lose, most of which goes back on when I eat 'normally'). Really think I will have to start being stricter with myself (I tend to go a bit mad at weekends) otherwise I will lose all my motivation!

Interesting. Maybe another research topic?

A 1lb difference in weight is c.3500 calories. I think the difference might be random, but the other possibility is that your steady 'grazing' yesterday meant more water retention because your glycogen stores didn't get so depleted. This might make a big difference the next morning but not for weight loss in the medium-term.

I have the solution.

Unless it's a planned weigh in DONT WEIGH YOURSELF!!!!!

I know it's hard resisting the sneaky peak, but like you say it does more harm than good.

This last week on Saturday I sneaky weighed and was happy, then fasted Saturday, Ate Sunday, and weighed Monday as planned, and instead of the 3.6lb loss I saw on Saturday, it was "ONLY" 2.6lb, now I felt a bit miffed, but then thought, Numpty, 2.6lb is cool, and the extra 1lb plus some is just water and Pooh, no Eyeore or piglet, just pooh.......

@boboff: yes either weigh rarely or every day and use a trending app like Libra
@dominic: I'm including questions about whether people have one, two or three meals on fast days in the questionnaire
@Brocky80: going mad at weekends might be a good thing, perhaps be stricter during the week?

Hi Brocky80, I think it's too early to start rethinking any strategy. I weigh every day and observe daily weight fluctuations which don't necessarily follow the same pattern from week to week. The day after a fast I can see anything from a 0.75lb loss to a 2.75 lb loss and I haven't altered my meal timings over the past 10 weeks. I skip brekkie, eat a light lunch (usually soup) then have a protein/ veg based light meal in the evening.

I was 13st 8 before brekkie and 13st 12 after lunch...

After just reading The Fast Diet it's fresh in my mind, and was something I thought about on my fast day yesterday. It does talk about trying to keep your eating times as far apart as possible, such as breakfast & dinner so there's always 12 hours apart, or just one meal, as they found grazing all day long did not show the benefits of fasting longer periods.

My weight loss slowed down a few months in (with still quite a bit to lose) and I thought I was eating too much on up days.

I also found that people on here and elsewhere talked about only having one meal on down days. I decided to give it a go and found the hunger easier to bear somehow rather than with 3 tiny meals.

I have been trying to not over do it on the normal days too.

My weight loss has sped up a bit - could be due to both things! its working for me which is really encouraging.

I am doing 3 or 4 amounts of food on fast days - and still lost 12 lb in 3 weeks...
