Silly question...
05 Apr 2013, 18:30
I'm a bit confused about portion sizes and think I saw this question on another thread but can't find it.
When measuring rice or pasta should you double the uncooked weight to get the portion size - i.e. 25g uncooked gives 50g cooked portion?
Thanks!

Hi Moira,
Think that's about right, read somewhere 40g uncooked equals 100g but depends on type of pasta & rice.

Hope this helps!

You can use the calorie count from the uncooked weight so no problem surely?

I've looked this up for you in my trusty calorie book, which I no longer use having given up counting calories!

100g uncooked white pasta is 368 calories, wholemeal is 343
100g cooked white pasta is 121, wholemeal is 114

If you do the maths then this means that 33g (approx) of dry weight will give you 100g cooked weight.

I can't help you with your question regarding rice because my book only gives calories for boiled rice. Packets should give you the answer to your question too.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, all. Of course, it all seems very simple now!
Had a bit of a rush of blood to the head yesterday evening over amounts and proportions of my dinner and was thinking that cooked rice would have more calories than uncooked... Perhaps overthinking it all.
Dinner was veggie chilli from the 5:2 diet book and rice with a green salad - hit the spot after a day's fast!
