At the back of The Fast Diet is a calorie counter. I wanted to look up Hummus as it's one of the things I really like. It says that it contains 303 cals per 100 g. Everything says what the value is per 100g even things like a ham and cheese sandwich or a Tea or Beansprouts. Is it just me who thinks this is bonkers? Why couldn't they say, for example, one rounded/flat tablespoon or 1 mug or, made with two slices of bread from a sliced loaf or, in the case of the beansprouts identify the size of a serving - for example one/two handfuls and then give the cal value for that. You can't be measuring and weighing things all the time.

Can anyone please tell me what one rounded an/'or one flat tablespoonful of hummus is worth in calories?
If you assume a tablespoon is around 15 ml, it would look like a flat tbs would be around 45 for the 303 cals/100g hummus. My calorie counting app on my phone, though, shows v different values depending on the make.
So I now do weigh everything. I used to eat weetabix minis (the chocolate chip ones) every single day. And I was logging it in myfitnesspal as the recommended serving (40g). When I eventually got some kitchen scales I was having way way more, much closer to 80g but that was just a bowl full (in my emormous bowls lol).

So now I am paranoid. Even things like mayo, if I squeeze out on to a table spoon, and then weigh it, they weight is always higher in my experience.
But what the heck is a 100g sandwich? How do you differentiate between the bread/the filling/and the butter/mayo? I think this is very bad, personally - not remotely helpful. Thanks Caroline for your guestimate.
Hi jem, have you had a look at 'my fitness pal'? It's invaluable! If you have a smartphone download it, it's great! If not I believe you can just do it online

Lol, me to, I did the same thing

I also use myfitnesspal, it does give the calorie content of lots of meals and portions, just be careful some values entered by users are way off the real calorie content.

I do like the built in barcode scanner, which makes it really easy to find items.
I think they have porridge wrong too. I use My fitness Pal App too,it is fantastic
No I don't have any Apps. But I'll look on the Internet. Thanks.
I think the book was a bit of a rush job. Lots of useful information and interesting science but I don't think it was properly edited/proof-read. In the recipe for veg chilli it says you can have two tablespoons of wild rice then in brackets it says 80g. I have brown rice because it's cheaper (and it's more commonly available), and they say a normal portion is 75g and when I tried 80g it just seemed far too much particularly for a fast day but even for a normal day it would've been too much for me. So I think the 80g must be a mistake.Next time I had it, I measured out 40g and that seems much more reasonable.

On calorie counting and using the app (I use MyFatSecret)I still find it a bit tedious noting down every ingredient. So a sandwich could have any type of bread and any filling I don't know if I'm using the app wrong.
Does it state whether its dried weight or cooked weight? I've been caught out by this a few times.
I think it should be dried weight. I was in Weight Watchers (many times!) and they always stated the dried weight of pasta and rice.
