General 5:2 and Fasting Chat

Hi Folks

I'm curious to know where this splendid eating regime will take us all...

Will we all eventually hit a weight that looks about right according to the BMI charts and then stablize at that weight ? Obviously i'm taking it as red that everybody will stick to the plan (hehe) - i know there will be deviations from the goal but supposing we all just stick to it... where will it take us ?

Will our weight stabilize or will it continue downwards if we allow it ? Nobody wants to get toooo skinny now either so i guess all that would be needed would be to alter the plan sightly and increase intake on a fast day accordingly... simples !

Just curious if anybody out there has got to this stage already or if the heavy researchers have some 'food for thought' on this point. Sorry i couldn't resist that pun ... especially as it is fast day for me right now - lol (had to cook my son's diner too this evening - chicken+pasta bake ... now that was tough !!)

Very best to you all

BT

PS - A Big hats off to MichaelM for opening my eyes to the 5:2 secret weapon !!

Want to lose weight ? ... errr eat less food !
I suspect we will plateau at the point where cutting down on calories on feed days and/or on fast days will be needed and that this diet will not offer any magic regarding the basic energy balance situation! I imagine each person will have to decide whether to stuck where they are or to step up a gear.

There are some bits of info on the theory of how our bodies determine what weight they want to be in the nerdy stuff!
Hi BT

I'm coming up to 12 months at the end of Feb, and I've been around the weight I want to be (9st 2-4lbs) for several months, now. I was 10' 10" or thereabouts when I began, and just thought I had a bit of middle-aged spread (not that I'm middle aged, anymore! :D )

However, I just kept losing weight until I decided - that's it.

I first of all went to a 6:1 regime, but that didn't last long, since I missed the discipline of 5:2 - I just tried to eat more. However, surrounded by biscuits, chocolate, marzipan, etc, I didn't exactly eat healthily. I'm still working on this.

Now I've gone on to a modified form of 6:1:
Having a 24 hour fast followed by a <600 calorie meal then not eating until breakfast the next day on the Monday;
And, on the Wednesday, having a 24 hour fast followed by a normal meal.

So, 6:1 and a half, if you like. We'll see how this goes.

I'm firmly convinced that this forum will gradually switch from giving poster the tools to get the best out of the 5:2 protocol, to helping people maintain their weight loss! :D

Nobody wants to get toooo skinny now either so i guess all that would be needed would be to alter the plan sightly and increase intake on a fast day accordingly

If you want the health benefits from this method, best to use your extra calories on a food day, rather than a fasting day.

Cheers, B&W
How did you come across the 5:2 format as obviously most people only found out from Dr M's programme? Was it a modified version of the up day down day plan?
Very interesting B&W

Enjoyed reading about your bread making antics too ! I'll have to try some of your recipies !

All the best
Hi Caro

No, IIRC, there was an article I came across in one of the papers about the benefits of IF, which sounded interesting - so I googled it, found a couple of blogs recommending it and away I went.

Albeit only cutting my calories in half on my fasting days - I thought that 1/4 was way too extreme!

I was very glad to see the Horizon programme backing up all I'd read - so then I went to the full <600 cals.

Just remembered I've put most of my story on my blog:

http://nobreadisanisland.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/eat-less-live-longer.html

Just looking at it again, the articles were in Time magazine and the Independent - the links are in there.

Cheers, Paul
Sorry, BT, missed you there!

'Antics' just about describes it! :D
