Hello,

In a few weeks time OH and I will be heading off for a holiday in US and Canada - have been saving (and Slimming) for long while for this holiday so want to enjoy it.

Debating (with OH) as to fasting or not on the holiday but the thing I am looking for from any americans or canadians are any hints and tips on where to eat out or not to eat out etc. What to buy and not to buy (beyond the obvious)

Just interested in people thoughts really.

Thanks, in advance.
Ah, now someone else asked this a while back and there were some great replies...hmm, I just need to find the thread...

Enjoy your trip and avoid fast food it's not good for anyone. Here in the US the portion sizes tend to be pretty big, remember you don't have to clean your plate.
You didn't mention what areas of the country you are going to. So my advice is to enjoy the regional food. You have 5 days to eat what you want...remember? On the fast days stick to fresh fruit, salads and fish. And yes the portion sizes here are ridiculous. I guess common sense just like home. Are you traveling this summer? Be prepared the the heat!
Not sure where you will be in the U.S. but, here in California (and other States too, I am sure) most large chain-type restaurants (and I don't just mean "fast food") list the calorie counts right there on the menu - its very helpful. Also, if you have the use of a computer while away, you can check menus on-line before you go and calories are usually listed there too, along with descriptions, prices, etc. Many couples order one entree and "split" the over-large portion!!!!!

Have a wonderful trip!!!!!! :like: :clover:
It's such a large and diverse continent that it's hard to advise you, except:

Avoid Denny's. Like the plague. Even if it's 2am and nothing else is open.

As a Brit, you are unlikely to be tempted by American beer or cheese. Don't even bother with it, unless it's from a microbrewery or a small artisan cheesery.

If you're going to blow a lorry-load of calories somewhere, blow'em on barbeque.

The thoughtful travleler to Canada must have at least one Tim Horton's donut. It's part of their religion up there.

Have fun!
