Benefits & Side Effects

Hi there

I just wondered what studies had been done on the claim that doing 5:2 could reduce risk of dementure, and whether there are any 'tests' that we could do periodically to see if there is any change in brain/memory function in this area?

This aspect of the plan is really important to me as my Grandma had Alzheimers and my Mum is going the same way :-)

I definitely feel more alert since starting the plan but it would be great to see something more formal...

Thanks

Hi there

I'm afraid the only studies have been done on mice/rats. In a strain of rodents engineered to develop an Alzheimer's type disease, intermittent fasting protected the mice so that the development of the disease was delayed until the mouse equivalent of old age whereas mice not on IF developed it in middle age.

There are some online tests available to test brain power that Dr M referred to in his book. The link is to be found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=732

However, I could not get all of the tests to work properly on my computer so I'm not sure how useful it is. I emailed the site admin to tell them that it wasn't working properly (the test was ignoring my first keystroke on any test) but I haven't heard back from them.
Hi

I just found an online test designed to detect early signs of Alzheimer's:

Thanks Caroline for the info and links - I will give them a try!

By the way, the foodforthebrain site didn't like Google Chrome but worked OK using Firefox!
