Clearer skin and stronger nails
13 Apr 2013, 11:52
Since starting 5:2 six weeks ago my nails are growing super strong. I've always struggled to grow them before, I don't bite them or pick at them, they were just always really weak and wouldn't grow. And my skin seems to have improved too. It wasn't really an issue before but I have certainly noticed that it's clearer and smoother.

Just some of the other benefits of this WOE that I've noticed so far! Long term, it will be interesting to see the inside health benefits but I'm all for the ones on the outside too!

I didn't think I had upped my vegetable intake that much (I eat loads anyway) so what could be the reason for the growth of my nails? Maybe I do eat more veg, I just don't realise it?
Maybe you're just eating better and have corrected some underlying deficiency. My nails were always horrid but I started taking a glucosamine supplement for my arthritis and that has made them much better. I believe its a side effect that some find annoying but its been great for me. They used to be really bendy and flakey and I was so self-conscious about them. Bad enought having twisted fingers without having scabby nails on the ends!
My nails are better. My skin is still awful but that's the cold weather.
My nails are better too! A lovely side effect. I am attributing it to eating more avocados and being healthier in general.
My nails are stronger and growing longer. I think it's eating real food etc and not low fat 'rubbish' anymore!
I wonder if they're growing more slowly but stronger, like oak trees versus pine trees...slower growth = stronger. Fasting is supposed to slow the growth of cells which is why it helps with the side effects of chemotherapy. My nails are certainly better.
My nails are still awful but I work with my hands a lot so that might be why, my skin has been much clearer since I started this diet though :) wonderful side effect!
I've noticed my hair is falling out less. I used to shed so much hair, but now, nothing.... not sure if it is the diet or increase in salmon/flax oil.
My nails are better too. I've been a life long nail biter and over the last few years go through bouts of not biting them. They don't get very long before flaking/bending/snapping. This time I have had to cut some short because they were interferring with typing and not breaking under the pressure.

I think you might be right about growing slower Caroline. The nails on my left hand were bitten the shortest and they still havn't caught up with the right hand nails yet. And I feel they would have normally by now.

I've been fasting since January and in that time I don't think my diet has been that great. Not compared with when I was in the zone with weight watchers. I was eating more fruit and veg then, and not doing low fat diet foods. My nails were still bad prior to going on WW when I was still overeating.
Aye mine too! Noticed thumb nails were really hard, hardly ever cut them before as they always broke off- if anything, my diet is worse now, as I eat more cake and biscuits than before, but they are homemade mind. Hair is growing faster too- anyone else have that too?
Oddly, my hair is falling more. When I was eating lower carb I heard a lot of people say that their hair was falling out and yet mine had been great. Now the plug hole is full every time I wash it. Its never been great though since the FMS started and we have had a lot of family stress lately so maybe its just coincidence.
