British Slang

Being the international bunch we are, thought that this page of colloquialism's from these chaps might be worth a read. Would love to know similar slang from the rest of the world used daily that we are missing out on;)

I've heard the term "Chav" thrown around on British shows, seems to be derogatory. What does it mean? Also refering to people from North England as being backward. Is there a difference between North and South, like there is in the States?

Great fun. I came from Crawley before moving to France and it is known as the Chav Capitol....Council House and Violent! It is derogatory and is used to describe a certain type of person. As usual it is a corruption of language, the original meaning is a person from Chatham.

Hi Taphy, Chav is an interesting word in etymology, The word Chav is an acronym of "council housed and violent" it was first aimed at the people living on some social housing estates being anti establishment, where say, they would "twoc" (take without consent) your car for use at pleasure or have an old souped up car for example with oversized exhausts and car music speakers to match! Today though, it's as much about the antiestablishment and racist tones whilst wearing excessive amounts of gold and Burberry and less about where you live! Also for all the racist undertones the typical Chav is likely to listen to American rap music - ironic eh!

I didn't think Chav's were racist at all, in fact I assumed as allot of them more around in multi racial gangs, and they try and talk "gangster" that they were most definitely not racist.

Generally nowadays only your Dad is racist.

If there is, it's the other way up to the States.

The South-East of the UK is economically better off than the rest, as a generalisation, while parts like the North East having had a tradition of heavy industry, mining etc which have declined a bit like the US "Rust belt".

More socially mobile / higher skilled people will tend to move to where the work and money is, so while I originate in the North West I am now in the East Midlands 90 miles from London.

The issue of chavs being racist is to be found linked together on many sites on the Internet, yes it's try to say not all chavs are racist but neither are all white middle class royalist & anti gay!!!
To see if you are a Chav, try the test below. I scored 30% thought it would be higher

59% but then you all knew!

Right I am off to me Nans for Tea!

I still don't have any actual knowledge of Chav's being inherently racist, although as you say it's on the internet I will have to take that as proof over my own personal experience.
