I think it's down to if money - if you have it, why not? I will never forget when my youngest saw a Tag Hauer gold watch at one of the tax free shops in Nice (think he was 8 at the time) and went " I want that!!!". I checked the price and I told him no way. He got so friggin upset with me, but when I told him that it was the price of a small house, he calmed down. A bit...
I love jewelry, real jewelry but have only a few nice pieces I have afforded, or more correctly choose to afford, since I like to spend my money on other things too. Like sewing machines, fabrics and a trip to Houston
10 years ago when my sister turned 30 her husband bought her a 'Tag'......not a watch a 'Tag' - clearly a designer status symbol. Personally I would rather have a quality piece of jewellery - 18ct gold necklace or bracelet or diamond ring or earrings. I would consider them more of an investment whilst still being wearable. I'm rough on watches as I wear them low down on my wrist so the faces are always scratched or even cracked. I do have quite a few £5 fun watches like Penny.
Personally I wouldn't be without a wrist watch on ever
Got loads of them  but I would never pay over £150 anymore
And as I have loads I find that whenever I get a different one out well the batteries go dead so quickly so now trying not to purchase any more.
Like others have said I have lost watches in the past and the sentimental ones are so difficult to get over, the last one was taken from a hotel room insurance paid up but that doesn't make up for the fact that it was bought for you by someone who's not around anymore.
You'll do what is right for you in the end. Good Luck :clover: Sue
Yes, but I haven't! I got a Seiko titanium kinetic off eBay 5 years ago at about 30% of shop price and it has been brilliantly accurate, light, reliable etc.

Always fancied a Rolex/Omega but having a stack of Tesco tokens to spend in Goldsmiths came away with an Oris Diver as being better value. Looks good, dead waterproof, looks OK on my tiny wrist - and is Swiss Made (except they use a Chinese-sourced copy of a quality ETA Swiss movement!)

Son dabbles with repairing eBay Omega watches, he gave me an old Seamaster for Father's day which looks really good and still works well for 50 years old.

Would like to be able to get a Roger Smith Series 2 watch based on Daniel's concentric escapement but they start at £95,000 for the most basic model...

Oh, and for running I use a Garmin GPS watch that I got half-price from a friend, and my old Casio memory watch that I used in 1989 London Marathon, still going well, cost £24!
Unless I had lots of spare cash then no - I had a reasonably expensive watch for my 21st birthday but I no longer wear it as fashion/tastes change. My current watch cost £20 and I've had it about 5 years ..... does the job. There are loads of other things I'd rather spend my money on .....
If I was rich.
I rarely wear a watch myself so I would never spend much on one.
Fascinating thread. I had no idea there was such a thing about watches going on. Shows the time on my phone so why wear a watch?
I wouldn't spend a lot on a watch personally as I like to change watches and I'm not very careful, so I might lose or break it, but as you said you've had your watch for 30 years, so I think you'd be a good candidate for investing in a luxury watch! I don't buy luxury anything, but if I did a watch is a good idea as it's one of the few things you wear daily, so I'd rather spend money on that than say a designer dress.
I love yr idea of buying small items of jewellery as rewards!

Only you Isis really know if you deffo want the expensive watch or not
but if you can afford it and it will make you happy, why not go ahead? Life's too short not to fully enjoy it and spoil ourselves whenever we can x!

Ps sorry i didnt answer the question..
I personally wdnt spend money on a watch..if i had the opportunity to have a v expensive piece of jewellery it wd be a ring
But if i had a lot of money to spend on myself, and my health was good enough, i wd spend it on travel x
I can't go without a watch. Even though my phone has the time, of course, I don't want to have to dig it out to know what time it is. I had an Eeyore watch for many years. I must've change the battery in that one at least 10 times. My last two or three watches have been Swatches from the airport. The latest one I bought has an elasticated wristband to be easily removable with my broken arm.
I personally wouldn't buy an expensive watch. I haven't worn a watch in years. I did have an expensive one many years ago with a very small diamond in it and it was stolen from my dorm room in college. :frown: I wore a Mickey Mouse musical watch for years and later got a similar Pooh one as a gift. But, I haven't worn any watch at all in at least a decade. I have my Fitbit on at all times and will check it for the time or my phone.
I always do the "cost per wear/use" equation for anything I'm considering buying.

Say for argument's sake you bought a $2,500 watch. Say you'd wear it 250 times. That oomes down to a cost per wear of $10.

Say you bought a $250 watch instead, but you don't love it as much so you only wear it 15 times. That's a cost per wear of $16. The more expensive watch is then better value for money!

That calculation has stopped me from buying expensive things before, and has also made me upgrade from cheap 'n cheerful to something I love more.
That would make the R W Smith Series 2 about £10/day if I wore it every day that I expect to have left - a bit too much, probably...
No, love my old Timex!
