My first bail out
28 Nov 2013, 18:23
I am disappointed as today is the first day I've bailed out on a fast. It's a bit complicated really but yesterday I didn't eat much, wasn't hungry, so had a semi fast about 600 cals. So today I went ahead with my planned fast and came over all weird. I got to 11 am and my eyes went blurry, then I felt faint. As a first Aider, I'd just spent about an hour with a girl at my school who has regular spontaneous fainting and convulsions. And then had to remove another girl (who has had a brain haemorrhage)as she had fallen asleep in class, Bless her little cotton socks. A cup of tea just made things worse, I Managed to find a bit of cake which sorted me out, along with a stint down the field in the fresh air, measuring light intensity and leaf sizes. I've had a regular kind of tea with rice and a jam doughnut. Cannot make up for this fast this week now. So line drawn under and next week starts on Monday. I will however have my regular Monday fast, then weds is surgery day so 16.8 from then till I feel up to returning.

One thing that I like about this WOL is there is no such thing as 'failure' and because of that, I wouldn't be too hard on myself for not managing to fast on a day where I had intended to do so. If you come to the end of a particular week where you might have fasted for a day already, had intended to have that second fasting day right at the end of the week but didn't manage to carry that out, you can always declare that week a 6:1 week instead of a 5:2 one and so in that regard, it can still be considered as a success.

Even if you hadn't managed to fast at all by that intended fasting day at the end of the week, it still doesn't matter because there is always the following week and sometimes, it is good to get a complete break from fasting (which I will be taking myself over the Christmas and New Year period). That is part of why this WOE is so flexible and that is what I like about it.

Dear Carieoates,

Thank you for sharing and I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

One of the many things I love so much about this 5:2 WOL is that no matter what happens, tomorrow is another day and new fasting days will come.

Will be sending positive thoughts your way for a successful, uncomplicated surgery and speedy recovery.

Cheers

carieoates and rawkaren,[ please don't either of you think that you have 'failed' in some way because you did not stick to a certain number of calories you had fixed on consuming on any given day. So what if you did go over your limit or even completely blow it? Absolutely no big deal, no need to stress, feel guilty or beat yourself up about it  , instead, turn the 'failure' into a 'success' by learning from it, working out what went wrong and why :?: and trying again another day with that new insight and knowledge.
You have both done so well and have all the necessary tools to fix any little setback! :like: :victory:

I know you take 5:2 seriously and also are no slouch when it comes to exercise!..
I admire you for those things Carie...( hey and you @rawkaren also!)
A few twists n turns along the way are all part of the journey,so dont stress yrself, specially now when the op is coming up

There is nobody waving a big 'fail' placard over your head except you!
Chill, relax and say 'booger it' until after that op.
You'll be much stronger then.

I am so into that cat, how cool is that

Yes Carrie you are a :star: and maybe it is fortuitous to have that break pre op and once you are in the right zone post op and have recuperated you will be back on track in good time. It is a WOL there is no rush here

Best of luck for next week :clover:

I "failed" too. After being good and only had water and some table spoons of mixed beans, the dinner pie was too much. Had a normal portion along with some white wine and at that point it was "what the h-k" and had another glass. As you I didn't eat much yesterday, so it might pan out in the long run. Don't think I will step on the scales tomorrow morning. Or I might, just to see if there is a difference…. Well, we are not perfect all the time are we?

Just to echo what the others have said - there's no such thing as a 'failure' in this WOE - you sound like you've got lots going on at the moment and maybe if you didn't eat much yesterday, you felt a bit faint because your blood sugar got a bit too low....sp your body told you you needed to eat. Sending you best wishes for next week but don't be hard on yourself :-)

hi Carrie,

well done for being able to forgive yourself and move on - as many have said, you can weigh up your successes with the days things don't go so well and you'll still be miles ahead!

with my diabetic and my medical hats on though, I did have a thought - after the stress of caring for those sick kids, and the relative fast the day before, I wonder whether either you were a bit hypoglycaemic, or in a "stress reaction", where your body goes into gluconeogenesis (makes new glucose from the liver or muscles) due to circulating adrenaline and cortisol. Either would make sense (and make you feel like crap), and the remedy for either is eating some (preferably low GI) carb - sorry to be a bit judgemental here, but I also know doughnuts and most rices are extremely high GI, which may have the effect of starting the cycle all over again - would it be possible to have some dried apricots or peanuts or something else low GI instead?

Good for you for taking care of yourself!

cheers, Jools

Thanks @jools7 it is very handy to know what to have at hand in the cupboard when you do feel like yuck and your body reacts in the midst of fasting
