Getting Sweaty! Exercise & Fitness

10 posts Page 1 of 1
Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, and from what I've read so far, it looks great, and you all seem v. helpful and friendly :)

I've been doing 5:2 since mid-Jan and so far have lost just over half a stone. Which is all good.

But ... I've recently started the dreaded exercise - I go spinning on a Sunday, and gym (cross trainer, bike, treadmill) on both fast days (Mon/Thurs), and now my weightloss has stopped - in fact I've gained two weeks in a row - has anyone else had this?

I KNOW I should measure, and I will do in the morning, but I really need to see the weight move on the scales too - it's making me want to stop exercising so I can see the scales move again. Anyone any idea how long it'll be until I see the scales move again? Just a little bit frustrated as I LOVE this diet, but I'm now worried it's not working for me....

Thanks in advance for any help/insight/shaking me very hard!

Sharon

Hi Sharon
I'm no expert but I don't believe exercise would stop weight loss unless you are overeating to compensate. Seems a lot of us on 5:2 have some non weight loss weeks. Don't give up the exercise its too important for your overall health.
hi Sharon
exercise will also build muscle which is heavier than fat so you may initially see an increase due to building muscle mass but still be losing fat

Muscle weighs more than fat. Also, newly used muscle will absorb water in the healing process. It's normal and temporary. Don't get discouraged your body will soon re-adjust.
What Betsysgr8 said! It's temporary...and get that tape measure out!
wow, quick replies, thanks all. I'm definitely not overeating to compensate - sticking to my TDEE (or is it TDDE always get confused! lol) And I can't believe I've gained muscle already - so maybe it's muscles keeping water? I certainly hurt today - like I've been run over by a steam train!

Tape measure is out and ready to do the business in the morning - and will try and measure once a week I guess?

Thanks again :)

TDEE - Total Daily Energy Expenditure. ;)
I've just seen this thread, and it's really encouraging as I have had exactly the same problem. I've been doing the 30 Day Shred, which is a killer, and I love it. I have lost inches, and I can see I've toned up a bit and gained muscle, but it would be really nice to see the scales move down again. Good to see it's temporary!
Yup, if I've exercised to the point of hurting the next day then I'll have gained weight. I know it's just water retention but I agree that it's frustrating not to see the scales move downwards. And I never remember to use the tape measure!
Hi, I'm hoping this is the reason why my weight loss has ground to a halt as well. I started 5:2 mid Jan and lost about 8 lbs up to Easter doing practically no exercise at all other than doing 2k walk to work and back Mon-Fri. Over Easter I missed one fast and probably ate/ drank more but have since then started back at the gym (nothing too strenuous yet) and started the couch to 5k programme. I feel like if anything my weight's starting to creep up again! Anyway, I'm just hanging on in there and keeping going. Something's got to happen eventually.
