Indigestion and heartburn
18 Jan 2013, 21:10
Hi
I have been suffering from heartburn and indigestion on my non fast days but have never had problems before. On non fast days I eat normally ie. a small bowl of Jordans cereal and 1% milk, a light lunch and evening meal. Tea and coffee also seem to upset my stomach, however I only have 1 coffee and 2 teas a day. Has anyone else noticed a simular change on starting fasting? :?

I haven't had heartburn, but I do get occasional tummy upsets if I eat too much rich/fatty/sugary food or simply if I keep eating (because it's tasty!) when I know I'm full. I think of it as my body telling me I'm doing something wrong.

How long have you been fasting for? This could just be your body adjusting to the new way of eating, and it may pass. You could also tweet Dr Mosley about it, he may have some knowledge of this - @DrMichaelMosley

Hmm, not heartburn and not constipation as some have reported...rather the opposite IYKWIM! Seems that some digestive disturbance is not unusual. How long have you been doing the diet? Are you having tea and coffee with milk? My only thought is that perhaps you might try to cut down the milk on fast days?

Don't really have a good reason for suggesting it, just that if you have some kind of borderline lactose intolerance if you are having a relatively higher milk load (milk on breakfast and in drinks) on fast days that might be a problem.

Thanks for your responses, I'm only on my second week of the diet. On the first fast day I drank black tea and tried green tea which really upset my stomach. So now I only drink water on fast days. I feel good on fast days just struggle the next few days. I'm sure it's just my system getting use to it. Pleased that I lost 3lbs in the first week so determined to continue. ;)

Hi

We are about 4 weeks in and my partner and I have both experienced heartburn on normal days. It seems worse for me when I have had a large protein rich meal later on the evening. We will keep an eye on it and let you know what happens.

Overall the diet is working mainly because it is sustainable. It seems the Tortoise does win the race after all !!

Hi
I started doing the daily mail 2 day diet, on both days i had really bad heartburn, i think it was down to the large amount of protein you are supposed to eat. So stopped doing that and going to follow this one instead sounds much easier, first fast day tomorrow!!

Hi Alibaba, welcome. It's really interesting that you found the 2 day diet too high in protein. I hope you don't get heartburn on this one too. It might also be related to the high milk content of the 2 day diet if you are borderline lactose intolerant.

Anyway, let us know how you get on and if you find anything in particular that helps/worsens the problem.

Thanks for this Caroline, you could be right. I am vegetarian so most of the protein was made up from cheese (my big downfall)and other dairy products. Will see how I go today after eating my fast dinner.

hi Alibaba, when i tried Atkins I had the most horrendous heartburn from the fat & protein. I only lasted 4 days and I am a meat eater! Perhaps you could get your protein from tofu, beans/pulses, eggs? Good luck :D
