Do I need to eat on a fast day?
26 Feb 2013, 10:32
Hello

I was just wondering if I need to eat on a fast day? I feel it would be easier for me personally to completely abstain as once I start eating it seems to trigger the urge to eat more.

On my first day of fasting I left it as late as possible to have a bowl of bran flakes, then went to bed before the urge to eat more kicked in!
Hi nikki & welcome to the forums :)

Dr Mosley only suggested 500/600 cals as for most people this is easier than going without completely. However if you find it easier to go without all day and it doesn't make you feel unwell then I see no reason not to. You'll still have your 500 cals as a backup should you need them for any reason :) Let us know how you get on!
I did this on Sunday, and trying again today.

I do agree with Nikki, food brings on hunger.

Oh while I think of it, didn't Larry Hagman off of Dallas always do a 24 hour fast on a Sunday back in the 1970's as he thought it kept him healthy?

He seems to be doing ok?
I'm afraid Larry Hagman passed away fairly recently

nikki I think I am going to try not eating at all when I fast on Monday. This Monday I ate l less than 500 calories for my evening meal at about 8.15pm. Just before bed at 11pm I was very hungry but didn't want to eat at that late hour. I am better when I don't eat anything than when I eat a small amount. The food seems to make me hungrier for more.
I might try it myself next fast day, my last one (Monday) I was hungry in the morning, which is strange for me as I dont normally get the rumbles till around 3-4 in the afternoon.
I kept busy, drank lots and it went off...I never gave food another thought until after 6, I did have my dinner, but could've quite easily have gone without....best fast day I've had so far.
Thanks for your replies. I am going to try to not eat on my next fast day and see how I get on. I will just make sure that I drink plenty of water. I will let you know.
I get hungry for more when i eat too. Fasting today, all i had during the day was 1 cup of tea and i'v been fine. Just had dinner and now im craving something sweet. I will resist though and make pancakes for breakfast :)
I get hungrier with eating too. Not sure I could do without any food but just having all my 500 calories in one meal seems to work better than splitting into a couple of meals. However maybe I should try having nothing one day.
Will be interested to know how it goes Nikki.
I did Tuesday with no food again, and it was okay.

I wasn't really hungry this morning either and had Bran.

I am not sure if it's easier or not yet, I'll try again on Thursday, but it does make counting calories easier!
I fasted Thursday and did not eat until 8.30,then had bran flakes only to try to get rid of a headache. If it were not for the thumping head I could have done without. I did drink plenty so am wondering what causes the headaches?
I have decided that I will not eat on a fast day so I don't have to think about food, however if I do continue to experience headaches then I shall not deny myself. Insidently, I choose bran flakes as they are bland and don't seem to trigger cravings. I have to be in the right mind set and convince myself that the hunger pangs are a nice feeling (sort of) and imagine that the gnawing pains are gnawing away the excess fat!
I think headaches are caused by a combination of things including your body not being so good at relying on fat for fuel during the first few fasts.

I had headaches at first but now rarely.
