Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

Couple questions from a newbie
03 Mar 2013, 13:20
Just started the diet yesterday with today bein a fast day just wondered if I go to the gym which I do regularly anyway, can I have more calories on the fast day as would of burned off calories, or would this not be allowed? Also just wanted to know what people are losing in weight on this diet particularly in the first few weeks, I haven't got much I wanna loose, like to loose about 7 pounds hoperfully in a month, is that a realistic target?. Thanks for any replies on advance. :)
Exercise and eat as you normally would. Have your 500 cals on a fasting day even if you are exercising - the exercising will help the weight loss, no more calories though. As the total weekly calorie reduction is around 3000 cals and 1lb = 3500 cal then expect to lose a 1lb a week. The first week or two usually involves loss of water which results in a larger initial weight loss. If you have been a serial dieter it can take longer to get into the swing of things, you need to give it a month.
Also if you haven't got much to lose you may find it comes off more slowly. People who are already a healthy weight for their height seem not to lose as quickly as those of us who have/had a lot to shift - but then I guess that's the same with any diet - at least this this one you're not restricted every day!
The question about exercise and calories is explained in a bit more detail in the FAQ.

To get an idea of how quickly you might lose weight. Please do look at the progress tracker...at the forum stats...there you can select to see how people like you have got on (choose your age, gender, starting BMI). Exercising will definitely help though!

Good luck!
